Ok this is going to sound really dumb im sure. Ive had a 96 accord non vtec forever and it was my first car. I had just recently bought a 97 accord vtec and i had someone riding with me and they said my vtec isn't working. I dont know if its not working or if its just a very weak vtec. I have no check engine light poping on. What do you guys think?

 

You can't really feel vtec in an Accord. It has a sohc engine and vtec in it is more for economy than power. If you've ever been in a honda with a dohc engine with vtec you will notice a little difference.

Well I still don't know if its really working. Its been this way since I bought it and its a 5 speed. My old accord was an auto so there is already a big difference in the speed to me. But I have never ridden in a vtec accord before especially my model. But like sushiboiiii said I would think I could feel the pick up and hear it somewhat. I understand waht your saying 95acm I have a two friends that have a jdm h22a prelude and a rsx and their motors vtecs were pretty stout. The thing is can you hear the vtec engage on the accords sohc. Because ive noticed that pretty much every and I mean EVERY vtec car ive seen you can hear even a small whine or roar when vtec engages. Also one of my friends told me that it might just be that my vtec is getting clogged up. Is this a possibility?

Well, on the Accord it engages around 2500-3000 rpms. For it to engage you need to have oil pressure, a warm engine, and give it some gas. When it gets around those rpms it's hard to tell if it is vtec or just a 4cyl powerband.

 

if you pay atention when your going through you gears. you shout be able to se the rpms go up higher a bit quicker..

or you can build a vtec light that turns on when you highcam lobe engages. because saposbly vtec is always on...

this is very simple
1) buy a smal 12v light bulb like this.... found in the local auto parts



by some wire taps like this they are found at radio shack




and some regular wire 10gauge is good...


2) now wire your bulb with plenty of wire to reach from under you hood to the inside of your car

once you have the wires ready look under you hood and look for the vtech selenoid

looks like this



its located next to the top left corner of your valve cover
under that black tape is a green and yellow wire... thats your vtec wire.. just tap one of you wires into it using the splitter and now tap the other wire into a grounded wire.. u can usualy tell which wires are the ones that are grounded .. i used one that i found connecting from my valve cover to the altinator once its all connected close your hood but bring your light inside the car.. just make sure the wire under the hood isnt going ot touch any moving parts.. i just taped the loose wire to the ceiling of my hood.. after all this is just temporary.. ibrough the light in my car through the window... now if everythings connect right just drive around after you car has warmed up drive it a bit hard.. and you should see the light iluminate... there u go any questions?

^^^ Not neccesarily...there are times when oil pressure is low (for various reasons) that the CEL will not relay an issue with VTEC engaging. It just depends on what the problem is if there really is a problem. My suggestion, if the car is running fine, idling fine and your oil level is where it is supposed to be, dont worry about it, you didnt buy that accord to get some turbo charger boost when VTEC engages, atleast i hope you didnt.

As for "feeling" VTEC...heh, drive an S2000, it feels like a whole different car after 6,000rpms. My CL-S also has a very audible VTEC engagement you can feel without question...on your SOHC platform, you could try a cold air intake, because of the throaty sound they produce, many times it makes VTEC engagement (even on small D16 motors with VTEC on EX civics) quite audible, if its really that important to you.

 

is the motor in the CL-s the same as the motor in the new accord v6 6spd?

 

Not sure...its a J32, 3.2litre SOHC VTEC...260hp/231ftlbs. Same (besides #'s obviously)?

 

well given it could possibly be the sasme motor, in theory, many of the motor parts they make for the accord 6spd and the CL-S would be interchangeable?

(all i remember off the top of my head)

I'm not sure what all is transferable

especially the f20c s2k. open header/cat also amplifies audible noise of vtec engagement.

 

make sure that your engine is warmed up to operating temperature VTEC wont work witha cold motor also check the screen on your solenoid sometimes they get dirty if you get an intake you should be able to hear vtec engage

 

Okay I know that its not going to be a turbo boost of power on my motor. Thats understandable and I knew this. My thing is I didn't know if sumthing screwy was going on. I thought my vtec would have engaged a lot later like 4500rpm but i was way off. I appreciate the info. Im getting an intake very soon any how.
