Default Ashy Weld

When I weld with my stick welder... It makes a big black ash... when i take a hammer to test it, it breaks the black ash like its nothing and leaves me with strong weld inside...

what is the problem??? i made a bigggggg weld on a joint.. waited 20 seconds.. and still, i could break it with my hands

that coating is slag, its what keeps the weld oxygen free as it cools. this is why in mig welding you use a shielding gas with obviously dissiptes and leaves no nasty buildup like you get from the flux that is burnt during arc welding which leads to the production of slag.

I'd suggest at least reading a book on welding before diving in. Sounds like you have no clue what you're doing, and that's not too safe.

I saw a weld on ebay for 120 plus shipping.. a MIG one that is only 90 amps or something... will it be better than a 200 dollar stick welder?

Read up man. Welding has been around for a while and there are countless books on the subject. I'm sure your local library will have plenty of bathroom reading material.
