Tried to test drive
god car salesman are idiots
first off i guess i don't blame him for not letting me test drive a car considering that i'm 23 and look like i'm 16 still.
but other than that...giving me key selling points like "its naturally aspirated" and "that one out there is a 6 speed" i really wanted to just walk off. he just kept saying stupid **** out of his *** and was really scuzzy.
i found a hot black 01' with 24k miles but it was priced at 24,000. I really think that it should be under 20k for that year but who knows with that guy.

I used to sell cars, most slaes people dont know jack about cras and dont care. They're there for the money.
Seems he told you all the correct info, would you have bought the car right there if he told you anything else?

yea, well at least it wasn't the wrong info. although its like saying..ah man that car has a motor in it.
anywho, is it wrong to ask for a different salesman when you go into a dealership?

^^^ I can feel where your coming from man, but like soemone said already, car salemen really DONT CARE. I mean you could throw in their face 10 things they were wrong about when they speak about a car on their lot, and it wont even phase them, they see you as a money tree, and they'll let you be right all day long if it means a sale (and usually, even if it doesnt mean a sale). Rarely will you find a person who actually knows their stuff about cars in a sales position. My brother works for a brokerage lot that buys cars for various people and sells cars as well, i can say that of the 10 sales people on his specific lot (smaller higher line lot) that maybe 3 of them know anything about cars, and really only 1 actually knows much about the specifics (my brother is not a sales person but helps them when needed).
Its funny, when helping my father in law search for a car for my sister, we had a guy tell me that a 2004 S2000 they had on the lot was a 2002, that it was a 6cyl. and that it was a hardtop convertible...when i pointed towards my wife's red one sitting in the parking lot and explained that we werent there for their S2000 and that he needed to research the car a bit more...he walked away and sent another guy to help us...it sucks but ya know, oh well.

No, there's nothing wrong with that. If you don't like the salesman, ask to speak to another one, or ask for the manager. I used to be a car salesman as well, and it's true, most salesman don't care, but there are still some that do...
Some dealerships are better than others though. Like the one I worked at, knowledge of the cars was extremely important. A salesman knowledge would be tested, and if he didn't know enough, he wasn't allowed to speak with customers until he did know enough.
If you're at a used car lot, don't expect the salesmen to know much... There's simply too many different kinds of cars for the average Joe Blow to try to know. On a new car lot, your salesman should know nearly every detail about the car. If not, get another salesman who does. With a good salesman, if he doesn't know the answer, he should readily admit it and tell you that he'll find out the answer for you

well normallymost upscale honda dealerships are tight wehn it comes to test driving the s2000s but my good friend is a mechanic and all he had to do was tell the salesguy i was serious. And that was it, free test drive....unfortunatly there wad too much traffic around to hit VTEC...but awesome car from what i got out of it!
You are right about the under $20k thing.
I got my 01 with 11,000 miles for $19,500 a few months ago. It was listed for $22,500.
First, talk them down. If its that old they can come down a lot.
Second, make sure you wait to find the perfect one, I spent a month driving around the state looking at about 25 different ones first.
Third, have it checked out by another dealership or good mechanic, its worth the $80 if you are seriously going to buy it.

Yes...unfortunately alot of S2000 owners really dog the crap out of their cars, especially younger ones, or parents that let their teens drive them...and they can really take a beating and show it later down the road...one of the biggest things i look for when purchasing a car is the tires...they can tell a huge story about a car's history and the previous owner...but not just in the aspect of how they drove the car, but their car maintenance habits...my brother's boss who was a used car sales man for nearly 20 years told me that if you see a car with tires nearly worn out, you can tell that the person that owned it prior to trading it or selling it probobly either didnt pay attention to the basics of the car or couldnt afford such things...and sold it or traded it because they needed to do stuff to it but didnt have the money or just never got around to doing it...on a car like the S2000, that speaks worlds...because if a person is willing to drive a car with no tread on the tires, imagine what they were willing to do to things inside the motor that need replacing as well that you CANT see...
^ Wow...no offence but judging a car by its tires? I think by just lookin at the interrior, engine bay, and the overall apperance of the car is a much better guage in how the car was taken car of...then tires?
Also don't forget, you got your info from someone invovled with selling cars, and I think most have agreed that these people dono what they are talkin about.

The 2001 i paid 23K for it... and it had 17K miles... i didnt think it was that bad, but hell i bought it in the beg. of summer...
The 2002 i paid 24K for it... it has 19K miles... i kinda paid to much for it, but i didnt care...
The 2001 you looked at should be around 20K... but hell everything around my area is over priced...

lol...no offense, but i can assure you, this guy knows PLENTY about cars, and is a personal friend of mine, not some cars salesman. His point about tires is actually a MUCH more legitimate means of measuring a cars treatment...think about what your saying...
Interior - This is possible, but also, i know people that are mechanics that are just slobs, and with a good interior detail, their car would be flawless inside and out, they take care of what matters, and dont really care about how clean their interior is...so you cant really judge the mechanical quality by the interior...especially when you could pay about $50 and have the car look brand new inside.
Engine Bay - Are you kidding? I've seen cars that were complete junk with FLAWLESSLY clean engine bays...you take a car that has oil issues, and pressure wash an engine, you arnt going to see alot of the issues that it had before it was cleaned, especially if the person spends a few bucks getting things like an oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket replaced...heh, youd be suprised, appearance has little to do with mechanical condition.
Exterior appearance - Again...how does this in any way give you an idea of how the car was treated mechanically? Have you ever seen the front of a car that is driven on the highway ALOT...they have tons of knicks and scratches and they are usually dinged up more so than a car that is locally driven, but thats where it can get you, just because a car is in perfect shape on the outside doesnt mean its in great mechanical condition, just like the interior thing, you can have a car touched up and detailed to look great, and it can still be a piece of ****.
...the tire thing was just one little thing that can say ALOT. Think about a set of tires...now think about a higher line car like an S2000. You go look at an S2000 at a dealership, and you noticed that the tires are showing threading...what can that tell you about the car? A few things...all mechanically derived...
- The person wasnt concerned with upkeep of the car mechanically, by not replacing tires you can effect a few things, and it goes directly to show that if they didnt care to fix that problem, what other problems could the car have that the previous owner just simply over looked or disregarded.
- The car might have suspension issues, alignment issues or even have been in an accident which causes premature wear on tires, wear on tires which the person either couldnt afford to fix or wanted to dump the car so he/she didnt have to fix.
- The previous owner didnt have the resources to properly keep the car up mechanically, and thus, didnt replace tires that needed it.
...as you can see, though it is just one small part of what to look for, the tires can tell a whole novel of story about a car and its previous owner. So no offense, but i think my friend has a good deal of knowledge as to what he's talking about, he is an auto broker, and buys cars for people who are lifetime customers...you dont get that way by kicking tires and looking at how clean a car is...or by not knowing what your talking about.
