Expo 5 report by ME :)
WHEW!!
Started off by missing the caravan of DEATH... thank goodness.
Highlights:
- Parking lot mayhem.. well my old *** went to bed at midnight so I didn't catch all of it, decided making it to the drivers meeting was more important
- Passing everything but Ed Sackley in the dry, day 2 (Cone Andrew riding along). See ya Lotus Elise
Great sesssion! Not much traffic, lots of people flying!!!
- a half hour of damp track to myself, end of day two.
- Meeting Jim Batoutahell (instructor), Budman, Kendall, Comp97GSR, Opie, Rob Bbasso, the we-todds, Aquafina, Jetydosa, Dropspeed, the rest of the WV crew (Chris93si and Ferrell), umm... yeah, pretty much everyone! First expo for me means there were a LOT of new faces (and real life names).
- My car held on to all of its oil this time! I went through less than 2 quarts in both days of driving, and 1000 highway miles! Yay!
- Dipstick only burned a little, I didn't need a spare.
- 3 or 4 good saves, kept the car out of the mud.
- My new Hankook z214's... awesome!!! Great dry, OK "damp", but worthless in the real wet (half of day 2).
- Lots of AWESOME DRIVING BY EVERYONE!!! This group was way faster than BMWCCA, on average.
Lowlights:
- Getting passed by Sackley in day 2..
Nah he's super fast. I woulda caught back up with him if some Evo woulda gotten out of my way
I hope Ed didn't mind me not giving him a point for a lap or so...
- Passed by Dave Ott twice in the rain
I'll get j00 next time
hehehe awesome driving Dave.
- Cracked exhaust manifold.
That was a LOUD ride home.
- Cracked brake rotor on last session in the wet (I was using them...) Normal wear, I have spares.
- Oil temps of 300F. SWEET! What the ****...
- Car running rich when hot.
A few N/A cars were pulling on me, or at least equal, in the straights. Needs tuning!
- VTAK cutting out y0... need baffled oil pan!
more to come when I post a few pics...

My instructor reports getting 1:45's on Azenis, I asked him to verify that.
If that's accurate, then I may have more to learn than I think.
I haven't pulled any times off the from Saturday, but here's a couple from Sunday.
Session 3 of 2nd day, dry with advanced/instructor combined: I forgot to start the video camera!!! Nooo!!!!!
From my wife's intermittent video recording from outside the car, I had only one decent time of one lap, 1:52, and I gave up 1-2 seconds for traffic on that lap. I had some 1:58's following traffic
So without traffic I may have turned 1:50's, or maybe a 1:49 if I was lucky. I don't think any hondas were turning more than a second or two faster than that? I passed one of the Lotuses (Ace) pretty handily as well, not sure what tires or driving mode he was in.
Wet lap times from session 4 of 2nd day:
Before black flag with Budman and Mikehonda on track, wife passenger: (not timed), 2:07, 2:06, (pit). I had two saves that included countersteering and a little pucker in the anus.
After black flag, Dad passenger, (not timed), 1:57, 1:56, 1:57, 1:55, (pit).
The Hankooks were great in the damp, but really sucked if there was anything more than dampness.

Yeah, what was the black flag all about? I have some crappy pics of you and Mike out there. You guys were flat out flying for what the conditions were.

Debris on track I guess. Not sure.

hmm I don't remember being passed by any CW.
Maybe we were not on the track at the same time.
I just got home like an hour ago and finished unpacking. What an awesome weekend....!

With your car - 145's should be in target. I was pulling 1.50 last year. Unfortunately all my video from saturday came out so freak'n blurry you can't see GRRRRRR - no times for me :-P
I'll check friday's vids.
Chris - it was nice to meet you and your wife Tina {sp?}
See ya next year!!
Give us a hollar if you make it back to the KC area

Next time Wai... next time
We were both on the track. I was almost keeping up with Ed but got caught in traffic for a few laps while he caught up with you.

Tina and I had a blast, she mentioned she enjoyed meeting you, and talking with your wife too. Dale was cool too, I talked with him for a while at registration Saturday AM. It was nice of you to recognize him at the banquet
I chatted with Jim in IM about it too.. he was guessing I was 1:47-ish on Saturday. If a similarly powered car on a Moogen suspension, Azenis, and 200 lbs lighter (no passenger) can run 1:46, then my car with R compounds should be a couple seconds faster
[excuse] With the way my car WAS running, it may have had less power than Jim. Some of the well modified N/A cars were keeping up with me on the straights. Bbasso was pretty close, and a rainbow H2 car pulled on me if I didn't take 14/15 perfectly. It's not well tuned at 8 PSI, or so it seems, and it's already so hot (300F oil temp) I'm afraid to go back up to 12 PSI on the track. When the car was hot, at ~12 PSI, it made 239 on the Mustang dyno Saturday, and I was at 8 PSI at the track..[/excuse]
What is a passenger usually worth on a track, 1-2 seconds? I suppose it depends on the passenger.
I'm either going to have King or Whip Factory try tuning it super hot, rather than tune it cool/warm. Maybe keep running it on the dyno until the oil temps get to 260-280, then check A/F, etc. Also I need to resolve this cooling problem one way or another. RR98ITR eluded to putting some masking tape over the oil temperature gauge, that might fix it.
I'll go back to Saturday's tapes, I wasn't REALLY pushing it, but was moving quick enough that I might be able to find a lap or two with no traffic in the 1:4x's.
Bah, it doesn't really matter. But it would be nice to have a good time to compare with next time I'm at MAM!

I don't know, man... I don't want to think about it yet.

You should have kicked my *** to the curb so you could get a few un-ballasted laps when the track dried out. I'm sure I couldn't get under 1:50 with a passenger. Last year a 250# passenger added almost 4 seconds to my time at Beaverun. Take that same passenger to MAM which has more turns and braking points, and you're in a world of hurt. You also lost a few tenths when you removed the Gran Sport stripes from your caR.
i never turned on my hotlap in the dry but when it re-rained i showed a 1:52 that was on avon slicks... but i dont think that was a clean lap either so 1:45 on azenis dry sounds about right

For the record-- Jim corrected himself, he was actually 1:46's. I guess I underestimated the traction of the Azenis.

I didn't know there was a transmitter set up at the track. I didn't even plug my receiver in... damn it.
My car felt pretty good on F205 Toyo and R205 Avon. I should be able to go quicker in couple spots with my F225 Avon and R205 Avon race setup.

Travis, no I didn't have a transmitter set up. I wonder whose transmitter sackdz's receiver is picking up signal from.

i wanted to put my transmitter along the pit wall, but couldn't find a spot i didn't think it would blow off. ed's hotlap shouldn't have been picking up from mine, because i have an XT Ultra Lap Timer, not a HotLap. i guess i need to go get a tripod for this thing.
i suspect i was somewhere in the high 1:47's to mid 1:48's, but it woulda been really nice to know for sure. i felt quick though.

i dunno whose transmitter it was.. i lost mine last year. i just remember that sunday session when everyone was out, i was out there for 30-35 minutes straight and 4 laps before i came off i randomly turned it on and it was working
