Brake Booster vacume check?

Brake Booster vacume check?
How can i tell if a brake booster is still good or not when it's off the car? I want to insall this new one i have (well new to me) but i do not want to find out it's not working.

Did this once,
1) Start engine
2) let warm up
3) pump brake pedal firmly and rapidly and continusley (~3 pumps per second)
if engine idle goes up, leak in booster

I have my booster off the car. And when I depress the plunger, I hear ait coming out. It's not supposed to do that, right?
Also I have some kind of liquid coming out of the booster...
