What octane of gas do you guys reccommend for '93 Preludes?
I just got a '93 Prelude S for 2700. I'm just wondering if you guys recommend low, medium, or high octane. Is it really necessary to get high octane for a prelude?
Hi guys, i dont know if your cars are set up different from ours ie European but Over here all Vtec hondas require min 95 octane fuel and Jdm cars require min 98 octane. As i say that is providing Honda dont change the state of tune for the American market due to your standard pump gas being a lower octane rating than ours, our standard pump fuel is 95 and the high grade stuff is 98. Presonally i find that although not absolutly neccecery using the hgh octane stuff gives my higher mpg and the car is more responsive. On the plus side you guys have cheap as chips pump gas wheas we currently pat 087.5 pounds sterling per litre not gallon !
yeah cars in europe also perform better then the cars in us, because here we have shitty gas. most states only offer like 91, but nj is lucky enough to atleast get 94 but its expensive as sh*t.

98 octane at the pump? Do they use the same method to determine octane as we do in the states? It would be awesome to be able to grab 98 at the pump, not that most of us need it.
87 is fine for an F22, I think using higher octane would be a waste.
My Si manual says use the highest possble but I try to run 89 most of the time. The compression isnt that high and I cant always afford the 93. When i do my h22 swap im using 93 all the time tho.

mid grade is usually $.10 less than premium... meaning you save about $1.00 for each 10 gallons of gas. you will put usually 12-13 gallons on an empty tank. if you cant afford that extra dollar then you need a new job

In Cali certain Unocal 76 stations have 100 octane at the pump. I only use race gas so I rarely use it at the pump, but about 5-6 years ago it was a big help on the way to go street race or to a track.

yea theyre different rating systems...read it in scc lol.
but, i think the manual that came with the preludes said to use at least 91 octane for si and vtec motors, but you can use 87 for the prelude S

Good point.
I guess its not that I cant afford it, more so that I dont think a stock h23 or F23 needs 91+ octane. I think 89 is sufficient enough for sub 10:1 CR. I might get flamed for this...but thats my two cents and I know 89 octane isnt gonna blow my engine up, retard timing so much that I dont have power, or cause detonation.

hrmm, i just have a stock odometer and mine says "premium unleaded fuel only".

You guys say that using high grade ie higher than 89? is a waste this may be true but our cars come from the factory with a sticker inside the filler cap that reads min 95 octane only so based on that i assume the cars require it. Also as i said i get better mpg with the high octane stuff so it works out cheaper in the long run. In answer to your question about whether we use the same method to determine the octane rating i havent a clue. i believe the fact that you guys have lower octane fuel is that due to the fact that you guys live in a much hotter country so a higher octane fuel would evaporate far too quickly (for example while the car is parked or when you remove the filler cap) therefore you would get shitty mpg. As i say im not 100% on this it's just a theory.
ludebehavior you guys are arguing about what level os gasoline to use. Im saying that in the Vtec's, it says "premium unleaded fuel only". Premium is usually the gas that has the higherst octane on the pump (87,89,91) hence you would always use the 91. If honda recommends it then my guess is you should do it lol. Its way better on your engine too.
I don't do everything honda reccomends, and it hasn't killed me yet. I don't put only genuine honda MTF in my tranny, i use syncromesh. I don't use honda oil or oil filters. I don't replace the "replace every time its removed" bolts every time. Their reccomendations are just that: reccomendations.
You're right about the gas though. I run premium in my vtec prelude just because that's what it says to use and its not that much more expensive.
