when clutch springs fail
Thanks to .RJ first of all for telling me what was wrong and being right about it. Anyway I was autocrossing last sunday and at the end of one of my runs my clutch felt really odd, and after that I was having problems getting my car in and out of gear, and while it was idling in gear the car would shake something fierce. After letting it sit for a while, the car would do it on and off, and randomly leave me stranded by keeping me out of gear. Turns out this was the problem:
(the two springs on the left and right have gouged out the metal around them). Just thought I'd share since I couldn't find out too much about it when searching before.

My girlfriends GSR did that. She was on her way to my house and she called me and said it would and wouldnt go into gear. Ao i pulled the tranny and found out that her spring actully fell out and was lodged between the disk and flywheel sometimes.
hey guys when this occured, did you lose all pressure in the clutch pedal too? Today i was driving my 98 GSR and had to slam on the brakes real fast, afterwrds though, I lost all pressure in my clutch and my car woundnt go into gear..after a few minutes i got it in second gear and got it home....now I stll have no pressure on my pedal but if i push the pedal all the way to the floor i can shift gears. this same problem happened to me about 3 months ago and i had a new master cylinder put in, but I dont think that was the problem since it is still hapening? Also I have a hyper stage 3 clutch 6 puck with a clutchmasters aluminum flywheel if htat helps which is under a year old..Please could someone help me here cuase I am confused and dont want to waste money on something and then have it happens again two months later..peace
oh I have no problem getting the shifter out of gear and that has not been an issue just the lost of pressure in the pedal and then after a while the pressure will come back but this time it has not come back as it had before...

I just changed out the clutch today, same exact problem. It's sitting downstairs, but I'm too tired to take pics. Basically one of the little pieces holding the spring in place broke off. Now I have a Stage II

It's a fairly common problem with stock clutches.
In both of the cases I've seen, the clutch pedal pressure gets heavier and as it progresses, the tranny starts grinding gears no matter how gently you try to shift.

And ckyguy what kind cluch was that?? OEM? </TD></TR></TABLE>
I second the try bleeding the clutch fluid idea, mine didn't feel lighter so much as it just feel really odd, when i ran out of fluid in the clutch master cylinder earlier this year the pedal felt really light though.
And yes that's the stock 120xxx mile clutch disc, unfortunately I couldn't afford anything better than a stock replacement clutch kit since I have a $500 service on my bike that I'll need to pay next week and the $200 clutch, and I only have $300 to my name....i'm thinking problems are comming soon...at least my car will be on the streets again, we'll see about my bike.

Such a common prob b/c the little metal lip that holds in the spring is too weak and thin IMO ...happened to me too btw so I got a ClutchMasters Stg3 and the way the springs sit in there compared to my stock clutch makes me feel a lot better
