ls/vtec on stock internals, any input?
whats up guys i really dont post up much here i just joined and i did a search and came up with nothing to help me but right now im currently building a Ls/vtec setup with a stock B18A1 bottom end around 100k on original motor and chasis and a 95 gsr head converted to OBDI, i have a P28 which im chipping and a golden eagle ls/vtec oil line kit in the mail, the head is going on next week but my question is how much will i make to the wheels? would i see more positive results if i got a cable B16 tranny? im currently using this car as my daily driver and was wondering on the performance side of this project.... im going to be building the motor with aftermarket rods and pistons after i get a new tranny because my stock ls tranny just has too long of gears.... but anyone have any numbers or imput on this setup? thanks
current setup in garage and in car
92 DA LS
105k on chasis and motor (stock)
2 1/4 inch catback
cold air intake
95 GSR head converted to OBDI
new belts and water pump
new axles
Future mods (1-2 months)
hopefully find a cable B16
new rods/pistons(not sure of brand)
new clutch stage 2+
more agressive tune with new cams

alright homie, let me break it down for you
a cheap *** job of ls/vtec is not going to last very long, and your going to be like
wtf, i thought it's suppose to be faster than this. and when the motor blows you'll just blame it on the motor.
first of all the problems of the 1st ls/vtecs were the STOCK rod bolts on the ls's there just to weak and they stretch. so in order to fix this problem, ARP rod bolts is the answer.
ge ls/vtec kit is the ****, definitely use that.
you have 100 k on the block, that's pretty low mileage on the car but i'd rather rebuild it. and when you rebuild it, you can use the arp rod bolts. shot peen the rods.
now onto the pistons
what octane does the gas station provide you? generally people use jdm itr pistons or the jdm p30's for the ideal street use compression. (do more research) I don't suggest you use ctr pistons though.
on the right track w/ the cable b16 tranny because of the shorter gears.
you need a good set of camshaft w/ appropriate upgraded valve train
a decent header
make sure you have a vtec oil pump and vtec water pump. you also need to match the timing belt to the water pump meaning
b18c1 water pump you will need b18c1 timing belt.
ofcourse this is just the jist of things. but with more research you'll make yourself the ideal ls/vtec for yourself

yeah thanks for the imput dude, its really just to get things on the road for now im basicly using this setup untill i get another 2 pay checks then im going to try to build the motor itself.... im just trying to get it put on so i can drive to work etc... im not really going to be doing any hardcore racing or anything of the sort while its not built, but ive heard that golden eagle rods break so im not gonna consider that as a option for now unless someone really objects to it, im kinda new to this ls/vtec thing and i was planning to build a decent little turbo kit untill i found this head so ehh, im basicly trying to keep it as low reving as possible since i know the ls bottom end isnt as strong as a B16 or gsr so im guessing 7200-7500 good enough for now? the gas stations around here go from 87-93 octane (texas), also down the road im thinking about trying to find a set of ITR cams springs retainers etc..
