Default Little plastic Chrome ring below shifter ****

How do you get the little plastic chrome ring below the shifter **** off? the chrome on it is peeling off and i need to replace it! 1998 coupe EX 4cyl.

Shuld I replace it or just peel the chrome coating off and paint it black? Any suggestions?

Thx

that silver thing is a plastic piece attached to the boot. take a flat head and wedge it between the **** and that chrome piece. it should pop right out.

Unless I am misunferstanding you that does not work? There is the shifter **** next little plastic ring then the leather boot and if you feel underneath the leather there is a platic piece that the leather is slipped over. I can't pop off that ring because it is one whole piece tight together because I can't get the **** off by unscrewing it because as you turn it the leather twistes up with it?

Anyone?

Thanks
