Default Over revved engine, bad bad ticking, help

i'm not sure how high my engine revved, but it was definatly too high, it was shifted from 3rd to 2nd at redline, i'm not sure how high exactly it went because i was in the back seat(don't ask), anyway, i'm afraid something really serious is wrong like a bent valve or something, but it seems to run ok, it got me back home, and theres no cel, it just sounds like the valves are really really out of adjustment, any ideas? thanks in advance

Probably floated valves if you downshifted from 3rd to 2nd at redline and kept it there for a while.

it was only for a second, but it was enought to mess something up, the only thing i can think of is the piston hit the valves, but it seems like it wouldn't run well, or even at all if that happened

the ecu is stock

If you just bounced off the rev limiter I assume you should be ok?

the only way a piston hits a valve is if one the timing belt breaks and two if a rod takes a **** or piston ring which in turn would turn the piston looses in the cylinder which you'd here, ive never heard of over reving a motor and just having a piston slap the valves and it you think that take the spark plugs out and get a scope and look in side at the tops of the pistons

you just made me feel SOOOO much better, thank you! i just finished my b18c swap a few weeks ago, i was so scared, i hope to god thats what it is, after the engine cools we'll take a look. oh and i know someone with an ITR who shifted from 4th to second and his pistons slapped the valves, but he saw his tach go past about 12 and i don't think mine went that high. so yes it does happen

A rev limter don't help if you mis shift...youre gearbox wan't to make revs...

i mis shifted from redline 3rd gear to the 2nd gear...and blown up my engine..
after some calcolations my engine has running 12.600rpm...

if i was you do a complete check at your engine

cr test etc

Please quit posting. Ever hear of valve float? And how the hell is a busted ring going to cause the piston to hit the valves? It's not like there's 1/4" of play between the piston and the cylinder wall without the rings in there.

Back OT,
I think the OP over reved his motor. It probably saw 10,500RPM+ (assuming it's a B16 here) and he floated a valve or two or 6 and now has some bent valves.

yeah, luckily i don't think pistons hit valves, i'm not sure, but honestly other than the valves i think its ok, i just don't see how it woulo run right if that happened, or at all for that matter with bent valves. anyway i pulled the valve cover and the valves are definatly out of adjustment, some of the nuts are completly off the adjusting screws, but they're still in the head floating around, whan i saw that i about ****, now that its day we're going to get a feeler gauge and do an adjustment, and a cr check, and hopefully everything will be ok. don't let friends drive your car, lesson learned

nuts just don't move themselves like that man. You've got bent valves. Hate to break the news to you like that. You can try adjusting them all day long. It's not gonna do anything for you.

i don't see how it would run correctly if i had bent valves, for one the valves wouldn't seat and there would be no compression, and the combustion stroke wouldn't yeild any power, like i said it got me home

It would still run. I'll put $20 on bent valves.

On a side note....
Those bent valves are eventually going to wear out your seals and cause oil burning/smoking.

how high would you think it would rev before the valves start floating?

just do the valve adjustment before you worrying about engine damage ... it isnt hard to do ... do a search and you can get directions there

try slowing down when you type it might help your spelling/grammar a little bit....

as for the topic creator, you obviously know if something major got fucked because i think it would be a lot louder than ticking valves and the ECU would have probably detected it already since you did have to drive it back to where ever your house was in comparison to where this happened. Give it a valve adjustment and why not a nice oil change while your at it and just remember loose valves are better than tight valves

I believe Valve Float is where your Valve Springs can't keep up with the demands of an extremely high motor rev, causing the Valve to 'float' without a proper rebound...

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not sure if that's right... Don't take my word for it.

its when the springs cant react fast enough to the cam lobes hitting them super fast and the valves just kinda stay open, rather than opening and closing fully. something to that effect.
