Default Best Advice/Tips on Start-offs? (drag racing)

Well...what do you think is the best way to start off in a drag race? Best techniques?

I was just wondering because I'm still pretty new to the whole scene and I keep wondering WHY my homie keep gettin me from the get go. We both have 94 civic ex's, except mine has an aftermarket exhaust AND he STILL gets me. So he must be doing something on the start offs that I don't. So any enlightenment is appreciated. THANKS

Go to the local drag strip and watch...

You can learn a lot by watching drivers... and asking them questions.

Please don't street race.

Ah, true. But I can't see what they're doing with the stick and how they handle the clutch. And uhm, in Monterey its kinda embarrassing to ask other racers on how to drive your car, esp the way mine looks, that and ppl here are haters. So that's why I'm asking you guys, a neutral party.

I learned how to double clutch by asking a BB. Now I wanna know the best way to start off..hehe

And if your wondering why I just don't ask ym homie, it's because he's a lil biatch lmao...he wont tell me ish as much as I beg lol

They duoble clutched on the upshifts in F&F. That is why he needs to do it.

Is it always necessary to put down the "outsiders" who wander in here?

the competition forum stereotypically has a nice personality and is known for being kind to anyone who comes in here. Let's not ruin it.

Anyway, to (attempt) answer your questions,

I believe you only need to double clutch if you don't have a synchronized transmission. And so you need to blip the throttle before you shift to make sure the engine speed matches the tranny speed to allow the gears to mesh properly. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong!

Also, when you start off, it's better to launch the car rather than dump the clutch. You probably want to keep it revved at about 5,000 and gently let out the clutch so you don't spin your tires. It does take practice and it puts a lot of stress on your stock clutch. So if you keep doing that, it won't last for long.

good luck man,

aj

When they mention they double-clutch on an upshift, yes it is. If we don't we will soon be discussing the power and torque gains associated with a Shogun Body Kit and Whale-Tail Wing as well as which drift line is the fastest way around VIR.

Don't double clutch a Honda.

Don't street race.

Don't come to the "competition" forum and ask about street racing. Street racing is not by any means competition and MOST competition people are extremely against street racing and the dumbasses who kill people daily while doing it.
That is why "outsiders" get such answers in the competition forum.

Take it to the strip. Ask questions there, ask questions here. But DON"T take the knowledge shared with you and run yourself into the side of a friggin' minivan.

I had no idea that he street races.

Yea, that's not smart. It will come back to haunt you sooner or later. If you want to drag race, do it the professional way. You will learn more at the track where there are more experienced racers.

later,

aj

My answer to the same question a while back:
There are so many different combinations of cars, tires, and surfaces that there is no one way to do it. With four bangers that make their power high in the rev range, the goal is to spin the tires on launch, and have them hook up as your engine is entering the meat of its torque curve. Once you're hooked up you'll be putting power to the ground through your motor's power peak. On each upshift, you want your RPMs to fall around your peak torque, no higher. So depending on your engine's torque curve, it's not always the fastest way to run the 1/4 mile bouncing off the rev limiter in each gear.
And of course keep it off the streets...

Let's give this guy the benefit of the doubt.

Ok ExTrEMe.......

1st of all, welcome to the cometition forum. We race. That's what we love. Ask us a serious question and I assure you you'll get serious answers.

2nd, we don't street race. Bad things happen when you do that. Maybe not today, but eventually. Talk about street racing and God help you in here, cause we sure won't. This is not Fast and Furryassed

3rd, who the ***** told you to double clutch on upshifts? What a tool he/she is.

4th, my suggestion on your initial question is look at the tires.

I never said I NEEDED to do it, I said I learned how to do it.

Thank You. You are probably one of 2 or 3 people on this thread that was actually informative rather than being for lack of a better word, a complete ******* about the question.

In my area we have two very isolated areas where we street race. Everyone is pretty smart when there there, but there's always 1 or 2 dumbasses that messes everything up for the rest of us. But usually we try and keep a low profile and we respect other people's safety.

Ok ExTrEMe.......
Are you implying i'm some teeny bopper rice boy? How does this board intend to gain respect when they immidiately stereotype people by what questions they ask and how they mod their car. That's just as bad as being a total ricer, if not worse.

2nd, we don't street race. Bad things happen when you do that. Maybe not today, but eventually. Talk about street racing and God help you in here, cause we sure won't. This is not Fast and Furryassed
More power to you. But I street race. So does a large percentage of ppl in the import scene. Believe it or not ppl STREET RACE. It's not going anywhere. I understand where you're coming from though, like when some idiot tries to race you and there's like 4 or 5 cars in front you guys or even when traffic is light. That's dangerous. But that's them, not me. I run in isolated areas with friends.

Anyways, I didn't mean any harm with this thread, or meant to start drama. I was just trying to "learn" (or can't people do that in message boards) how to start-off efficiently (sp?)...Sorry if you guys feel "ThE BiG BaD strEeT RaCeR iZ rUiNiNg OuR foRuM"...I didn't mean to

If you are street racing you are not respecting anyone's safety.

We know that. Does the fact that it isn't going anywhere mean that we should associate with it? God forbid those of us in this forum save our racing for controlled enviornments like tracks . . . what the hell are we thinking? C'mon guys - we are in the import scene - the street is where its at - F&F StYlEz y0!

No, no, no, and no.
Street racing is moronic. Organized street racing is moronic to the tenth power. It doesn't matter if it's on a deserted, obscure backcountry road. Racing on public roads is just plain stupid. What the hell is the point? Don't you want trap speeds and ETs? Do you just have to prove that your CWest big mouth kit makes you faster than the guy with the Boeing 737 wing? It is something only a total looser would do.

At this point since you admit you are street racing you won't be getting much more than picked on here. YOU say street racing is huge. Fine - it is also illegal and stupid. If you want to do it that is your problem but we do not condone it, support it, participate in it or acknowledge it as any form of competition other than what 4drh22 referred to it as. Call us asses or whatever. It doesn't hurt us. The only real asses in the motorsports scene are those who race on public roads.

If you want street racer answers to street racer questions go to The Kills . . . if you want to talk REAL competition on a REAL track without the Bling Bling factor then stay here . . .

I know this is entertaining, but its making this place look ugly.

If you street race... dont expect any kudos form anyone here (or help for that matter)

Thank you and goodbye.
