Default AWD Civic Wagon......my wagon needs to be fixed!

Well, I just finished hookin up the propellor shaft yesterday and went cruising around with AWD y0! Everything was working fine until just before I got home. I'm not really sure how to describe what I felt, but it was sorta like the rear wheels weren't spinnin as fast as the front, so every little bump in the road the tires would chirp and it would pull to the right. Well I got it home and shut it off, I woke up and drove it around a little bit and everything seemed ok, I decided to drive it to work, just to stretch the legs (guy who owned it before me must not have driven it much) well about 1/4 of the way to work I start experiencing the same problem as last night, but now I'm on the highway. About a half mile later....clank clunk bang bang followed by a rolling cloud of white smoke pouring out the rear indicated to me that there was a problem. I manuvered off onto the shoulder and a little bit further out into the grass so the rush hour traffic wouldn't be disturbed.

The engine still seems fine, and all the gears still work, and the car still can move, but makes a loud bangin noise. Underneath there was a big puddle of tranny fluid right between the transfer case and the transmission. I left it there and had a friend take me back to my EG so I could get to work, he'll get it towed back to the shop and we'll take a look at it later when I get off work.

Any ideas on what could have caused that to start acting like that before it broke? I'm hoping I've just destroyed the transfer case, but maybe there was a problem with the rear diff or the propellor shaft that caused it to bind and break or something. I dunno, but that thing is fun as hell and for $272 on ebay it is a great toy for the weekends.

Sounds like the rear diff/transer case took a crap. That would explain the drag in teh rear, which caused the tired to chirp whenever you hit a bump. Car probably didnt coast very well either? Get up in there and pull out whatever looks fubar'd...

I would pull the rear shafts before you drive it again. Try to limit the damage.

I don't know about the 88-91 but the 86-87 RT4wd had a lever that deactivated the transfer case, rendering the driveshaft/rear wheel drive disabled.
There weren't alot of changes on the RT4wd between 87-88 so it may be there. Might help you limp home

I know about the lever, not to mention there is a huge "how to" placed on the bottom side of the hood by Honda.

the only problem is.....you really can't get to it that easily, it's buried under the intake manifold and lots of wires and hoses, not to mention I'd have to take my tools to do it. It's not far from the shop and it's a free tow.

Dude it's not that buried at all. You can easily access it without removing anything else.

You just need a 10mm socket.

Towing the car with the 4wd engaged will damage the tranny

I want to say your transmission is gone but to be certain the rest of your drivetrain didn't grenade unbolt the prop shaft from behind the transfer case on the transmission. Using jackstands on all 4 corners try turning the prop shaft manually, see if the rear wheels turn at all.

If you don't mind me askin why did the prop shaft need to be hooked back up? was it disconnected when you bought it?

btw, I wanna say check the board, I think I posted the same answer or maybe someone else has a different spin on this there

yes everything is from my AWD civic, I'm going to part the thing out instead of fixing it. I'll email you details this evening. You can have the whole thing if you have a dolley and can haul it home. Needs a tranny and a rear diff.
