ive just started tuning some motors and they have turned out great. Now, what is the deciding factors in what kinda ignition timing at certain rpms. theres gotta be a better way then just dyno tuning till you get it. I mean, you can degree cams to try to come close to the cams settings, so theres gotta be someway to know where to start and add/subtract timing other than trial and error. Is there a typical number that these engines like to see??? where i can work off of? maybe cam specs are a big deciding factor? So far ive been working off stock maps and just adding a little timing in the last three columns, and it seems to be3 working out great so far but by far NOT maxing out potential. I have 93 octane available at the pumps, so maybe we can push the envelope a little??
Im not askng for anyone to share there secrets, but just aim a brother in the right direction to successful tuning and happy engines.

This is incorrect
You would not want to advance ignition timing until detonation occured. In most cases: You would want to advance ignition timing until the vehicle stopped gaining power, then you would back off from that point by 1-2 degrees for safety purposes etc.

thanks for the reply's. Is there a certain advancement that i could go buy till i get to the dyno. I mean, are you finding that most motors like a certain X amount of timing? whats the most you would ever feel comfertable advancing and with what grade fuel???
Sorry to impose...................Similar subject
I had my car tuned on 112 for the track, and I am going to run 93 ever so often. I was thinking of adding a little fuel from the SAFC and then retarding ignition timing a couple degrees. Then I would be fine I think......right!
