Default HID's

My sedan needs HID's bad. Stock headlights suck. I found a thread in the Appearance forum but didn't notice any EF/ED's while scanning through.
So far I found these links:
http://faqlight.carpassion.info/
http://www.hidretro.com
http://illusion-lighting.com/
http://www.ultrabrightlights.com
^ It's a lot to digest. I want projectors to be part of this equation to manage the light pattern.
Ready to buy, just need to know what to ask for when I'm shopping around.

Any of you 88-91 guys have HID's???

^ Good prices you got there. What *K are they? I'm wanting some purple hue action.....I've seen 6000K and they're bright blue. So maybe ~8000K.

Anyone else?

Not looking to buy off H-T, just need some EF/ED specific experiences.

Should I seek out GLASS projectors, or will plastic withstand the heat/etc?

Throw me some ideas.....

i have HID's on my 91 hatch and they look awsome. the are 8k's and i got them from hidynamic.com for $280.00 shipped. I will try to post some pics later but i never have luck with posting pics. BTW mahatma you don't have to worry about HID's melting your housing because they run cooler than halogen bulbs.

What I would do is buy the aftermarket ED projectors that have the euro clear front on them. You know, completely void of everything.

Then I would buy some REAL projectors off of ebay. BMW, Audi, Mercedes etc. Most of them use the same projectors.

You can generally find the projectors with ballasts, ignitors and bulbs for ~$300-500 depending on the condition.

Then you need to retrofit the HID assembly into the back of your new headlight.

That would be the ideal way to do it, but it'd be very expensive.

The second best option would be to buy the ED projectors and just throw an HID bulb into the back of it.

I'm not sure how great (or poor) the beam pattern would be after this. I'm not certain that the manufacturer of the aftermarket ED projector headlights necessarily aimed the projector in any certain way.

As far as glass vs plastic...all of the actual projectors will be glass. The headlight cover (front) will usually always be plastic. I've never seen a glass aftermarket projector headlight for an ED. The plastic will hold up just fine.

Why is the harder, more expensive way better in this case? (I know, it always is)

Would the quality of the light be lesser with an aftermarket kit like McCulloch vs OEM like BMW, Audi etc?
Or is it just that the light pattern may not be ideal in a cheap aftermarket projector?

Thanks for all the responses.

here's a write up i did for a local forum:

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by fujii13 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">first of all, as of november HID kits are illegal in NY (as well as hyperwhite/blueish bulbs) unless the are HID RETROFIT kits. this means you can't just stick HID in your current setup and be like, hey i have HID. cuz you don't. you have a piece of **** that blinds ppl. and even tho i doubt they'll pull you over for it, the next time you DO get pulled over, they're gonna tack that bitch on as another (fix-it) ticket.

for you to do a TRUE HID setup, you need to have a headlight w/ a CLEAR housing. that means none of that fluted **** that disperses the light on the lens. CLEAR (this may require you to go w/ aftermarket housing or wetsand the **** out of your stock housing until it is perfectly clear).

then you need to take the ENTIRE HID system from another car, (S2000, e46, audi TT are the best and most popular choices) that inclues the projectors, ballast, etc. and retrofit it into your CLEAR housing.

i repeat CLEAR HOUSING. if i found out you read this and still put HID in your stock housing... baseball bat time.

for those of you who have clear housing and projectors w/ halogens that think they can just stick D2S bulbs in their halogen projectors... YOU CAN'T. halogen projectors do not have the cut off that HID projectors have, and you will STILL BLIND ONCOMING TRAFFIC. you MUST the HID projectors or it will just as bad as if you are using a fluted lens.

lastly DON'T USE A COLOR TEMPERATURE OF OVER 5000K! unless of course you live on clinton ave and have a 4 dr "ack" legend. then you can do whatever the hell you want. anything above 5000K (i prefer around 4200K) will have that really shitty "i bought this on ebay" blue HID look. don't even go there.

in summary, i am the most **** person you will ever meet about HID. it's my passion, i can't help it. if you EVER have any questions about HID kits, PM me i'll be happy to steer you in the right direction...</TD></TR></TABLE>

btw, 8K is purple HID and screaming for you to get pulled over.

I still want purple though
Would I be able to swap bulbs in any OEM application based on my desired light output? (4000K--&gt;6000K or vice versa)

Do you not like the way the S2000 looks?

The S2k only uses a 5300K bulb I believe.

The COLOR on a REAL HID setup comes not from the bulb, but from the projector.

Get a good projector (BMW, Audi, Infinity, S2k) and you'll have the awesome color those cars have. It'll look just like that.

i have to disagree with the fluted lens thing have you seen the stock acuras that have fluted lenses and hid's? how do you explain that? older audis and mercedes also have fluted lenses no prob there, i just put hid's in my plastic fluted sir headlights and have nooo problems not blinding at all, you just have to remember that 1 mm can make a huge difference in light dispersion, i measured the stock bulb with a micrometer as to where the low beam filament was and modified a 9006 hid kit to be aligned in the same position(the sir's take a weird h4h bulb), i also made a bulb sheild out of aluminum that covers the front of the bulb so as to not blind, looks completely stock,

If you have USDM headlights with the fluted lens, it's not going to blind anybody.

That's not the position I was taking; it may be others, but it is not accurate.

The problem with the stock fluted lens is that the beam pattern is crap. The way it lights up the road is very choppy and disorganized; it negates just about everything that's good about HID's (broad, flat, evenly lit beam pattern) aside from the fact that they're brighter.

OK, armed with mo' knowledge, I've just purchased some BMW 3-series projectors. They're supposed to be bi-xenon (with a shield that moves to change from hi to lo beam).....from researching I believe they must be from an '02-04 Bimmer.

I'll be practicing on my old rex's halogen projector housings for correct fitment.
