Default anyone know anything about the visual aspect of a smog check? CA here...

I was wondering just how **** a visual smog test at a "test-only" station can get... what if you can still pass though you fail visual? or do they even go that far after youve failed visual?

if they see a turbo or supercharger, is it an automatic fail?

and what about obd0-obd1/obd2 conversions? will they know if youve done one?

This is mainly for future reference as im looking to convert the good ol EF soon.

Oh and of course im in California being governed by the Smog ****'s

few places i have been to automatically want to fail you before they even begin just because of the visual aspects of it all. even something simple as an intake cause a red flag with the mechanic, so i would have to remove it, before it can be smogged.

1. MOst likely
2. MOst likely not
3. maybe maybe not

If they see anything that's aftermarket they'll want a carb eo #. However some places will pass it as long as it passes the sniffer...if you give them extra incentive$$...there are also places that will pass it even if it doesn't pass the sniffer...with more extra incentive...$$

i just reread ur question and my answer is how LEANIENT (sp) a test only smog can get. im sure others are more strict

i went to test only with my b16. pcv unplugged and a aftermarket intake tube rigged up to a stock airbox.

the guy looked at my motor and did the test without tellin me anything. then when it failed he said that my pcv was unplugged and i need to plug it in. nothin about the intake. nothin about the DOHC. he looked at the hood but it was for a different year. all you hafta say is the hood is from a different car and the vacuum hose diagram is void.

bottom line. test only you hafta pay if it passes OR fails doesnt matter. so they will TEST it. if it fails u still gotta pay em. if the TEST it with your mods the computer will not ask for any carb numbers so if they put the car on the rollers and it burns clean you WILL PASS SMOG.
