Default Test pipe or hi flow?

I really dont want to run a cat but I have heard that it will smell horrible, is this true? its going in a 87 crx with a OBDO B16 swap, apexi N10 muffler. should I go with 2.25 or 2.5in pipe for the whole system? any good cheap hi flow cats? Im in New York so I dont have to worry about smog. any power loss or negative effects for the car from using a test pipe? I searched but everything was too broad.

Thanks in advance, Matt

...go test pipe...it'll give you the most efficient flow and the best performance out of your B16A...just my 2 cents

Some people would say go for test pipe, and others would say go with high flow. in my opinion i'd dyno both on the car, because i've heard stories of people getting more power with one of em. well, my 2 cents

Don't gut the cat... you never really get all the catalyst out and it can impede flow.

I had a test pipe and didn't like the sound, so I bought a CarSound (I think that's who makes it) high-flow cat and I like it a lot better. Plus it's 100% legal. That's just my $.02.

my exhaust with a gutted cat smells. and its completely gutted, theres no reason it should still be rattling inside, except the heatshields if theyre still there.

but it smells, i dont recommend it. just get a high flow cat.

Testpipe

Your emissions are a lot richer, no biggie! Other than that, your exhaust has a whole new sound..more aggressive!!!!!!!!!!! Make sure to go Omni-power.

I feel it's one of the best out there hands down!! http://www.kteller.com

They have the best price and amazing customer service!!!

hm. i got a hi flow cat off ebay (~$30) and it was essentially a test pipe.
straight-thru airflow, nothing to filter or impede the exhaust.
just like a little resonator.

but i'm sure the name brand hi flow cats actually do something......right?

normally the exhaust will smell when your cat has gone out.. i have had a test pipe for a long time with no bad smells. i also have a carsound hiflow cat but it just makes the engine sound wimpy at high rpms. just feel like its holding the engine back.

there wont be a huge difference but i prefer the testpipe... hell ive seen stock good condition honda motors pass emissions testing with a testpipe.

Who cares if you lose a few ponies between a test pipe and high flow cat because in the end not only would the high flow cat be better in terms of pollution but also doesnt give of the **** smell and sounds loud as hell.
