Thinking of chipping/converting to obd1. What should I do?
I just recently bought a 98 gsr with ctr cams and a 4-1 header. The new cams make the car sluggish when the vtec engages at 4400 rpm. The vtec engagement needs to be moved upward. I bought a fields contoller off of ebay and got ripped $118 bucks cuz the ******* sent me a fried unit and wouldnt warranty
. So now im thinking instead i would maybe i would just chip the ecu. can you chip an obd2 ecu? What ecu's could i use? i know that if i get a p72 ecu from a 94 it would be obd1 and i could get the conversion harness. but what about a chip? i cant afford to go hondata or anything and i think ive decided not to use piggyback. Really the only thing im looking for is smooth vtec engagement and properly working secondaries
.
any suggestions?

what intake manifold are you running? if stock, id use the jumper harness and the obd 1 ecu. if you are using something that doesnt have secondary runners, like the skunk2, then id use a chipped obd1 p28. i have never heard of anyone chipping a obd 2 ecu though.
yes... im using the stock manifold... i KNOW the best thing to do would be use the 94-95 obd1 p72 gsr ecu! but what would be the best way to handle the vtec engagement? and if the answer is "chip it", then would getting an ecu other than the p72 benefit me any? anyone else?

the answer is not to chip it. if you chip it, the vtec engagement will be preprogrammed. you should get a vafc or some kind of vtec controller therefore you will be able to find the "sweet" spot for your setup when you dyno. you can also use your butt dyno but thats really hard to say if you are truely making hp or not.
get an obd1 ecu, obd2a to obd1 conversion harness. Uberdata is a good way to start. i'm learning my self, you'll seen a chip burner, and some soldering skills.
