How to Tell (PICS)???
alright my orignal question is at the bottom but i noticed something and just realized it was a bad thing. i am missing the spring in this picture ( and have been driving like this for awhile. could this be my only problem or is my tensioner still bad)

can anyone tell me if there is a way that i can tell if any of these are bad and/or going bad??

also when doing this tensioner job do i have to replace all of these usually or just one or two of them?

Do you have enough money to do it right once or to do it wrong twice?
That spring is not absolutely necessary but if your tensioner nut gets loose do you want to find out if you needed it or not? It's what, like $2 or less? That is less than a gallon of gas.

well i noticed that i was missing the spring after writing the post, so i deff. was gonna change that , now what im gonna replace is the auto tensioner anywyas. i might actually do a complete timing belt and water pump change if i have the funds, but im in the middle of replacing the tranny too so money is tight. thanks for the help tho
and on a side note unfortunately 2 bucks is more than a gallon of gas lol
also i think im gonna leave the balance shaft belt, should this cause any problems other than shaking at idle?

lol, come out to california. the gas prices here were pretty damn high. it was up around the 2.80 mark.
edit: we have preludes. it requires us to pump 91 octane. this does not count for 3rd gen and below. if you are pumping less than 91 octane, you are an idiot and i hope your engine blows up because you detonated, so i can laugh at u.

i hope your not saying that you hope that i pump less than 91, maybe your saying it to the guy who said gas was cheaper than 2 bucks but i deff. hope your not saying it to me ...
and thats just because if you really wanted to know what kind of gas i use it is 93 octane, which is alot better than your puny gas, so whos laughing at who
and if that comment was not directed toward me than forget i even said it
