oily spark plugs
My 1993 Honda Accord had a rebuilt engine put in approx. 6 months ago. It began to idle and run very rough so I checked the spark plugs and found them to dripping oil. What are the possible causes?
where is the oil on the spark plug? Is it on the part where the plug wire goes onto the spark plug? If so, then you probably have a bad spark plug tube seal. The upper tube seals are fairly cheap and easy to replace. You can either buy the valve cover gasket kit which comes with 4 spark plug tube seals, 5 rubber/metal washers for the bolts and the valve cover gasket. Or you can purchase the tube seals seperately. I would probably buy an extra tube seal just incase you rip one while installing it. I ripped one the first time I install those seals in my valve cover, but since then I haven't had much trouble getting them in.
To replace/install the upper tube seals you need to remove the valve cover and lay it upside down. You'll see 4 black rubber seals sitting inside the vlave cover. You will need to pry them out. It can be a bit tuff, they are snugged in there really good. Once you have the old ones out, take the new ones and coat the outside with a little motor oil. This will help you push the new ones into the sockets. Once you have them all installed, put some liquid gasket in the corners of where the cam comes out of the head and then put the valve cover back on. Put everything back in the reverse of removal and you done.
I've never done lower tube seals so I don't know how to do those but when most people get oil in the spark plug tubes it's generally the upper tube seal. But do make sure before replacing anything.
