engine knock...please help
When I start my 95 GSR when it's cold or cool it has a knocking sound not ticking but a knock sound, which sounds like it's coming from the bottom end but who knows. I watched the oil pressure gauge the one day and soon as the pressure is up it stops, which is fairly quick. After the quick couple secods it stops and doesn't do it again until it cools off. Any ideas what the knocking could be? I've had it to a few different mechanics and none of them knew what it could be, mainly cause it only does it at certain temps and purrs like a kitten when it's warm giving them no where to even start looking. This has me and alot of other guys baffled.

take the oil pan off is the easy way.....but i take the oil pump completely off.look on the bottom of the pump for a allen head plug.take the plug out,there will be a spring that comes out w/it.put your shims in "i did .035" and at idle i have 50 psi and at wide open throttle i have 120,very healthy pump.i do not have any leaks or excess oil usage from doing this.
over time that pump will kill that motor,so fix it as soon as you can?

This is not an accurate way to do it. Heavy metal flakes have a tendancy to obey the laws of gravity and stay in the bottom of the pan while the oil drains out. Take the pan off and inspect. Youll be suprised at what you find. Also check the pickup.

You shouldn't have to take the pan right off. I have a magnetic oil plug and inspected the oil. You'll find stuff in the pan with the most healthy motor, it's more when it starts to really show in what you drain. I'm gonna put a new oil pump in it and do a valve adjustment, if it fix's the problem great if it doesn't well then I'll keep going over it and asking till I find what it is I guess.

piston slap on a motor that only has 55,000 mles seems hard to believe. If it has piston slap then I wll be a honda hater from here on out cause the last few Hondas I've had have been nothing but headaches.

It's getting a valve adjustment next week and some new oil. If that doesn't make any difference then I'll try a new oil pump. It's a start so we'll see what happens from there.
This is a dumb question... but seeing how it hasn't had a timing belt done, could that have anything to do with it? The sound really seems like it's on the drivers side to begin with.
if youre around 90k or 6yrs i would do the t belt anyways, if its not there yet and the motor is relatively stock, i would doubt that would be it.
well it got a nice new timing belt, tensioner and a valve adjustement today. The rattle seems to be gone. I'll leave it sit for a while now and let it cool right off and see if it does it, it did sit for quite some time before I picked it up and cooled right off and should have rattled if it was going to and didn't. But as for now it seems as though it's fixed. YAY
