Are lightweight crank pulleys bad?

Default Are lightweight crank pulleys bad?

Is a lighteight crank pulley really bad for your motor? If so why?

ones that arent sfi approved put wear on your engine because they arent balanced perfectly. you can feel slight vibrations as the engine harmonics kick in. stock or sfi approved . to aem and ebay pullies

unless your bottom end is balanced, I wouldn't put any pulley on that doesn't have dampner, just because the pulley is balanced doesn't mean your bottom end is

The only underdrive pulley I'd put on is this, because it dampens out balancing issues.

OTOH you lose power steering and air.

Not good at all..they cause serious engine dammage.. i would never run one if I got it for free+ install.

I wish i knew it was bad for my engine before I put it on. I can barely feel a difference in performance, and the engine does sound different and vibrate a little more. That damn fluid filled one costs like $300 though, and how much less does it weigh than the stock one anyway? Are the stock ones even balanced?

stock ones are 2nd best to the fluid/sfi approved ones. another thing you can do is cut down the stock one for pullies you are no longer using and get it rebalanced

and beside even if you did use them your not gaining anything really off of them anyways... there really not worth for the troublt anyways.. so **** it..

The proper way to underdrive your accessories is with new accesory pulleys. The proper way to lighten your rotating assembly is with a lightweight flywheel. If you must have an underdrive crank pully, the best thing to do is shell out the big bucks for a Fluidampr. In fact a Fluidampr dampens crank harmonics better than the OEM damper (wich only works in a certain RPM range).

PS: even if your bottom end is balanced, there are still crank harmonics taking place. Crank harmonics are the flexing of the crank arms from the shock of comustion. It causes them to resonate back & forth. If not controled, it can quickly destroy your oil-pump...

You know, I inquired about that back when I bought my UR underdrive pulley set (which I never put on BTW - it's in the big box o' parts I never bothered to install), and was told that nobody made them. I bought the full set and was a little surprised that the accessory pullies were stock size - they were just the crank pulley color. In other words, no value except for bling-bling.

That was 6+ years ago, has anything changed?

well my engine has about 100,000 miles on those AEM ones...
so ?!! i dont really know what you are talkin about... but i would put the money in a flywheel instead.. today.. much more fun !!

but im have AEM and fidenza fly.. so that saved my 15 LBS AT LEAST !

How about the CTR N1 crank pulley? Stock Honda and it only weighs 1.8lbs.

No need to bump this discussion. It has been covered 1000 times. CTR pulley is for a race car (and I wouldn't even use it for that), and so are any other pulley that removes the harmonic balance. Why would you spend all that money on a motor, and not want to protect it in every way possible?...?

yes this have been covered many times.. as there are opinions..
but as stated before.. i have about 100,000miles in AEM and about 60,000 on flywheel.. ultra light fidenza ! and my total miles is about 201.300 miles
