Default Oil coolers re-visited

Well, not long ago we had a thread about oil coolers. I wanted to hear what yall think about this one.

This is a Toyota/TRD unit for the 7th gen Celica (or so they say). It sandwiches between the oil filter and the engine block, and there are already place to run the water lines in the Celica (some capped lines on the US cars). This may even be a stock item in Japan.

The question is, in a small heat exchanger like this, how much cooling would you expect (now the coolant/radiator is taking the thermal load, rather than a separate heat exchanger).

Anyone have a clue as to how well this might work? Other comments?

Better than nothing

Helps warm the oil up and will stabilize the temps (oil and water) when the car sitting still.
Not sure how well the unit will work under heavy thermal load.

Similar to the stock ITR unit.

VW's have had those since 84 and the biggest problem was they tended to fail and mix oil and coolant. Not good for either system The primary benefit is obviously cooler oil, but it's not very powerful so don't expect much. As noted, it also warms oil too in cold conditions. A very mediocre oil cooler setup in the grand scheme of things.

Those are the answers I was hoping to get. I wasn't aware that the ITR or the VW's had a similar item.

I doubt it will be worth the overprice that TRD will want for it, not when I can do the real thing for less money and have it work better.

Thanks

I would just go with an aftermarket oil cooler that has a tube/fin design. It's far supperior to the little TRD units.

If your going to spend money why not get one of these. Good enough for McLaren's should be good enough for your car.

I detest sandwich adapters. Had a nightmare with my factory Talon one. If at all possible, spend a few bucks more and isolate the two systems.
