Default Humming

Ok I noticed another problem in my car stereo after installing the amp and subs it hum very badly on am stations doesn't do it all the time but does some. It doesn't sound like the subs it is a high pitched squeal coming from the speakers it sounds like. It didn't do it before I installed the amp and subs but I don't see how they could have done anything. The HU is a JVC Aresonal anyone got any ideas on how to fix it?

With the motor running I haven't tried to see if it does it with the motor turned off.

It can also be getting in through the power or ground wires to the amp, [ground loop] check the ground for the amp and the HU, also unplug the RCAs at the HU and the amp, [is the "squeal" still there?] BTW if it is more like a "squeal" and it's there with the motor not running, something that squeals, is hurting 94

It's going to be hard to get rid of if it only does it on AM. It could be anything from your spark plugs, the wires, your ignition coil, to grounding issues, sheilding issues, etc.

If it's all the time, then use higher quality twisted RCA cables, and double check your grounding location is good.

My noise is coming through the speakers not from the actual HU if thats what you mean. I used the rca cables from the 4 guage Street Wires Kit are they any good? One thing I'm thinking about is that I grounded it to the bolt that goes through the metal in the trunk into the brake light thats in the window and I'm thinking maybe it is too close to the antenna in the window or something.

If you pull your back seat out, you will find all sorts of bolts going into the floorpan of the car, 10mm and bigger. Don't forget to clean off all paint, so ground makes contact with the bare metal of the floorpan. 94

So basically do I need to pull the rear seat out? I have done it once when I replaced it and it was a lot of work wasn't hard but I don't really want to do it again if I can find a better spot. I was just in a hurry when I did it so I didn't take anything out to look for a grounding bolt.

No you don't need to pull the rear seat. Just use a ring termanal and run the bolt which holds the seat in, through the ring terminal. Make sure its contacting bare metal. Use a dremal with a sanding bit to get down to bare metal.

Use a star washer too...they bite into the metal and give you a better ground.

Quick question about that. Do you put the star washer under the ring terminal or between the ring terminal and the bolt (on top of the ring terminal)?

it should go between the ground metal of the car, and the terminal on the end of your wire. I see so many people use those incorrectly by using it as a "locking washer". It's ment to dig into the ring terminal and also into the metal you're grounding to to help make a good connection
