Default what to look for buying a bike

I'm looking at this 600cc early 90s yamaha. It sort of runs right now, that is the guy can start it with some work on the throttle, but it dies without keeping up the fancy throttle work, and it doesn't respond the greatest to its reving. I can't take it out for a ride yet since it's missing the masterlink (which is ordered on the way), but suposedly it ran great before it was sat for 2-3 years gumming up the carbs. Also trying to switch gears I could only feel 2 gears clicking, is something just out of adjustment or is that bad news? So basically 2 things- is there anything(s) I should check before buying it, and if I do buy it how hard is it to adjust the carbs or how much would it cost to have someone do it for me? I know this bike sounds like a piece, but I'm trying to spend under $500 for a sport bike, and I can get this for well under that.
