Spun bearings...low oil...sabatoge?
Hey my dad's s2k just started making clacking sounds after we got it back from getting the tires changed out at costco. I check the oil and found it only had 1.5 quarts in the thing. Is there any way possible for this much oil to be missing? Anyone else have this happen to them before? Is it likely that the factory warranty will cover it? This is extremely frustrating and I'm not sure of the extent of damage to the engine. At a minimum I would expect to replace all the bearings...possibly the journals could be damaged as well. The oil was last changed 8/24/04 and ~3K was put on it since then. How soon would the engine show signs of the problem.
He only put 3K miles on it in the last 9 months?! I think he'd notice the billowing black smoke if he was burning oil or the river of oil under tha car after sitting for so long. I dunno what to tell ya bro, it probably won't be covered under warranty, he drove it with no oil!
Nobody was supposed to touch the oil. Why did the check engine light not come on? I'm not exactly sure about he mileage, but it only started clacking the last couple weeks. It does not burn oil. How much damage could occur from having 1.5 quarts in the motor and running it for a couple weeks...worst case scenario?
sure about the spun bearings?
you can drop the pan and remove the cover and check them for play yourself. it doesn't take that long and should give you an idea of the damage. regarding warranty coverage - not sure. but I'd like to know.

well, i haven't actually checked the bearings, but it definitely sounds like there is some rattling that there is not supposed to be. Tomorrow the car is going to be towed to the dealership to see if it's covered under the warranty.

1. well, i'm not positive the problem happened at costco.
2. my brother was the last person to my knowledge to touch the car and that was around 9 months ago. surely if he screwed up it would have become apparent sooner. Even though the car is only driven a few times a week.
3. could something wacky happen? I've never heard of anything like this.

there have been times after oil changes that the drain plug on the oil tank comes loose and sometimes falls out.... this is due to people using power tools to undo these bolts and in return it strips the threadding.....
this would be the wacky thing that might of happend..

Put the corret amount of oil in it, then go from there. I changed the oil in my friends s2k and it also had 1.5 quarts in it. I was so shocked it wasnt even funny. i put new oil in her and went and gave it 9 grand and it was fine.
no, that did not happen in this case. The drain plug was very tight and there was no evidence of any oil leaking from the engine. I thought it may have been a possibility that the plug was gone, but sure enough it was on there tight.
I did fill up the oil to the right amount and changed the filter. I'm not sure whether or not it should be driven since it still is clacking pretty badly.

A lot of S2000s use a lot of oil.
Mine uses a lot of oil. I dont know the exact reason why.
You should check the oil in your S2000 at every fill up.
Do not tell the dealer that you ran out of oil. Put the right amount of oil in there and claim you dont know why its acting funny. They will claim that you ran it without oil or that you overrevved it anyway. Good luck.

good news! the dealer did replace the broken parts. The only damage was due to one of the pistons having a lack of lubrication. The block was replaced...and best of all...it was all covered by the warranty.
