Default Bought an 01 929

well i just bought a 2001 929 with about 4000 miles and its been sitting. right now im working on trying to find a gas tank because theres rust on the inside. its been sitting for a while. do you think i made a bad decision by buying this bike thats been sitting?

do i need to have certain parts on the bike replaced or serviced? i want to do everything i can to get this bike in fine running condition to help it last as long as it can. it ran fine before i took off the tank when i checked it out, just wondering if theres more i should do, or things i have overlooked.

also, will acid dipping work to remove the rust well? because im going to repaint the tank anyway. if not, how good is that kreem three step rust removal solution?

finally, does anyone have anything to tell me about 929's and their characteristics? any other resources for 929/954's? what parts are interchangable? anything at all, thanks.

My friend has a 954RR,

You have a good bike, and hopefully a good deal. Not sure sure about removing the rust, or the interchangable parts, but your methods you're asking about using doesn't sound bad.

I also know the 929 around here (jacksonville, fl) aren't too common. so good job. and good luck

Check out fireblades.org for all your 929 needs.

Make sure the fuel line and clutch basket recalls have been performed on your bike if it is a candidate.

Invest in a steering damper because the front end gets twitchy exiting corners hard.

As far as the gas tank, look into getting it acid dipped as replacements are expensive even on ebay. It will basically strip the tank down to bare metal. It is done on cars that are getting a full restoration. It will need to be treated/primered before it flash rusts again, unless you are planning on just polishing it so you have the bling bling effect.

The 929's are a good bike, I havent had any problems with mine. It has sat for almost a year and after filling it with gas and charging the battery it fired and was ready to run as if it had only been sitting for a day.

As far as parts interchangeability, from what I understand you can swap out the front end/rear end, exhaust, foot pegs and things like that.

The fairings are not a direct replacement as they went through an overhaul of the design in 02 for the 954.

hey guys, thanks so much for your replies, i appreciate it.

that site should come in very useful, i have the service manual too.

i already began the kreem 3 step etching and coating process because i really want to ride, and i ordered a new fuel tank because the old one doesnt look too good. i also got some fuel injector cleaner so hopefully that will help somewhat.

i called honda about the recalls and they never called me back yet, bastages.

ill be sure to look into a damper, probably scotts. sounds good man, thanks again, i'm going to have some fun on this beast

the side and uppers swap right on with the use of the 954 fairing stay. all the other items, headlight, ram air covers, inner fairings have to be changed

Really? Everyone I have spoke to stated that they would not bolt up. Aside from buying a set and mounting em, I took their word for it. I wish I would have known that before I pieced together another 1 1/2 929 body kits for my bike. (I plan on painting them sometime in the next millenium )

Did you mount a set of 954 plastics on yours or did someone tell you it would work?

Too bad the 954 tail isnt a direct replacement or I would put one on mine.

i had some on mine before the wreck. they just bolt up. i was in the process of fitting the gauges to the 954 fairing stay. once you have the 954 fairing stay they all just bolt up. i really liked how it looked. i was going to keep the 929 tail and have all the plastic painted 600rr candy blue. would have been sick but oh wel, maybe another time
