Passing NYS Inspection with a CEL.... HELP
Yeah, I need advice again
...
I have a code for the Barometric Pressure Sensor, which from what I read means that there is a discrepancy between that and the MAP sensor. This sensor is in the ECU so I cant even replace it.
I went with Raul (B18 C Spec R) to a shady inspection place in Yonkers (where he got his car passed with a CEL a year ago) this morning. The guy says that they have the new "plug-in" system and that there is no way to pass with a CEL. His freind had an OBD2 LS ECU but the sockets werent the same. Then we went to another place and they said they just need for me to get any 98 ECU and they can do it.
I've heard that it has to be a 98 ITR ECU and then I've also heard that the ECU has my VIN stored in it so I cant even do that. I've got a couple inspectors willing to break the rules a little bit in my favor, but what do I need to do so they can do their part?

Most emissions stations now have this "plug in" type machine for OBD2 inspections.
It's just another way that NYS can collect some more $$$ and help the auto industry by promoting the purchase of newer and more environmental friendly vehicles.

Right before they inspect your car, pull the negative terminal off the battery to reset the ECU, then put it back. This should leave you code-free long enough to pass inspection.
I did this when I had my TL inspected in NY a few months ago and it passed.

I forgot more about hondas then you will ever know....

INCORRECT obd2 hangs onto the code for x amount of start cycles. i have failed cars because the code was still fresh.

That's what got me in the Turbo Pig with NC emissions last year. Reset the light in the parking lot, hooked it to the plug and got "system not ready."
Which reminds me. Need to get 'er in the shop before the end of the month

yeah i hate this obd2 bullshit. i asked them if they could put my car on the sniffer, just to prove the fact that it would pass regardless of the code, but the dumb ***** wouldn't let me. after all, isn't it really about how much crap we are putting into the air?!? then the guy tells me that i could run a straightpipe if i wanted, just so long as no one saw it and it didn't throw a code. one hell of a system
NC is (allegedly) doing away with the sniffer altogether, so if you're in a pre-OBD2 car, no more emissions inspection
One less hurdle when I get the Scout back roadworthy again - it *barely* passed emissions each year (first year required, no factory cats).

Can't do that anymore. The way the system is setup, if the dmv sees your car hasn't been inspected, they will refuse your registration renewal.

After you reset the ECU, it has to be driven under certain conditions in order for all the emissions monitors to run. In PA you have to have all but 2 monitors ran in order for it to pass. Another easy way to get past it is to pull out the comunication wire from the back of the DLC connector, that way their computer wont comunicate with your car and it will pass. Its the green/white wire in terminal 15 of the DLC.Hope this helps!
:Trying very hard not to continue with catchy Gwen Stefani Song:.... Honda Hemp, I'll look into that idea and try it if there are no other avenues. Would there be a problem with borrowing somebody with the same car as you's ECU and plugging that in right before the inspection? It takes about a mile before my CEL comes on again, how far do they drive it on the rollers?

How does the DMV know whether or not your car has been inspected?

In NC the systems are linked. There's a bar code on my registration that contains the license plate and VIN. Guy at the inspection station scans my registration, which comes up on his console. The console "phones home" to the DMV computer and spits back the car info. Then he'll plug it in and I learn if I pass or fail.
Oh, and they're getting serious about fines here. I got a $100 fine a couple years ago for going six months expired on my Scout (it was parked, but apparently I was still supposed to get it inspected unless I turned the plate in). Now the minimum fine is $250, I think.

Now how about if you make a sticker or if I changed the 5 in 1995 to an 8 (for my 1998 ITR) on the inspection sticker and put in onto the ITR? (I'm selling the GSR so it doesnt matter) When a cop pulls you over and enters your info into the computer will it tell him that I dont have an up to date inspection, or is it all by visual :crossing fingers:? It would suck to get caught that way. I'd imagine fraud like that would come with a hefty fine.

NY is bananas, all obd2 vehicles are basically F*cked.
and yes, there is a scanner on the registration sticker, thats the new way of enforcing tickets especially parking, so if you do that and you happen to get a ticket, get ready to get your car towed.
Best bet is to pay out and do it right the first time

Instead of getting yourself into one shload of problems, why not just find out how to go about resolving the problem.....
No more headaches or concerns...

Yeah!! just fix the problems with your car and do that inspection the right way. I know a guy who got arrested for selling nys inpection stickers and he had to pay a fine+jail time. I had one of those hot *** stickers on my car and since rip that sh$t off. I rather drive around with no stickers and pay that 150 fine than having legal problems. I have a 96ek civic by the way. I just finished putting a 96 ls motor in the car. The only thing i have to do now is hook up the 2nd o2 sensor and drive around for about 50miles to put the computer in ready mode...

Because your tag and/or VIN numbers are entered.
If your car isn't inspected before your reg is up, you can't renew until you get the car to pass inspection and provide them an inspection receipt number.

Actually in some of the Northern New York Suburbs it's relatively new. Inspections here are/were based on your residence counties population density. I grew up in Putnam and for years until just recently all you had to do was get a safety inspection. The first thing everybody did when they had a performance car was strip the cats.
