Default Valve Adjustment Power Loss

I have an EF8, Ive been hearing tickin under the valve cover for a bit now and peeps are tellin me i need the valves adjusted. I was wondering what kind of loss am i lookin at with the valves like this. people are tellin me it makes you lose a good chunk of power cuz the airflow isnt right on the car. someone give me your insight on this.

You are not gonna loose a "good chunk of power." It's neccesary for an old car, you are better off with the valves lashed correctly rather than not at all.

Alot of people tend to make more of this whole valve lash vs power thing than there really is. Let's face it. You are not going to gain much from having an extra thousandth or two of an inch of lift. And the duration difference from the extra lift is negligable as well.

i dont think the power loss is a big deal really, but get em right cause it makes the engine sound so much better and u dont have to tell people why its ticking all the time. make sure to make the gap right tho, i tightened mine to far cause i thought i could do it without the feeler guage and it just made my car run like **** when it was cold, and it would die a lot when i pushed in the clutch while it was still cold. if its your first time doing it just take your time and follow the instructions in a manual. after you've done it once you can do it in like 20 mins after u get the hang out it.

why would you loose power? if anything youd gain power. if your valves are loose they wont open as much and not let as much air in. if they are nice and tight then youll get proper airflow

As I said, the gain in the amount of lift would only be a thousandth of an inch or two. This just isn't enough to make a difference. As for adjusting them on the tight side, this can be dangerous. It is possible that they can be (or get) so tight that the valve(s) cannot close all the way. This will cause valves to overheat and become 'burnt' (where basically the hot gasses erode away material from the valve itself).

One more thing. Honda is not too picky when it comes to valve clearance. Most other manufacturers give a specific figure rather than a range for the valve clearances. But Honda gives a range. For instance, on a B20, the intake valves are adjusted to .003-.005 inch and the exhaust valves are adjusted to .006-.008 inch. So you really only need to get it within that tolerance to be right. I try to shoot for the middle. If you do so, you will not have problems unless you do something REALLY wrong.
