mini-me cam/ignition timing problems
I have a D15B7 block with a D16Z6 head. From reading around, I found out that this combination makes your cam 4.75* retarded. To fix this problem, I installed a 6th gen SOHC civic cam gear. The keyway on the cam gear is offset from the centerline as apposed to the z6 cam gear which is on the centerline.
What I had done was transfer the lower timing mark from the z6 gear on to the y7 gear I was using. I installed the y7 gear on the camshaft end and adjusted it for TDC and got everything aligned at TDC and installed. I started her up and got her within normal operating temperature to redo ignition timing. Apparently, my ignition timing was way off. Too far advanced I think---way past the red mark towards the radiator side. So I retarded the ignition timing--turning the dizzy towards the radiator all the way and was only able to get the timing a hair past 18*.
Should I have had used the z6 cam gear to set it to TDC and then put the y7 gear on? Am I half a tooth or a tooth off on the cam gear? In need of help!

up, i have the same issue with the cam timing and the ignition timing on my mini me. i have an aem adjustable cam gear.
how much should you adjust the cam gear in order for the timing to be set correctly?

what's your mini me setup? what year model car is your cam gear for?
if you have my setup, with the stock z6 cam gear on a 1.5 block, the cam is half a tooth off-- about 4.75* off. the 96-00 civic cam gears--y7/8, is suppose to put the cam timing back to 0*. I've been having some problems with ignition timing settings since the install of the y7 cam gear.

its a 95 civic DX. d15b7 with a z6 head and z6 aem cam gear.
I could never get the timing to go all the way to the middle line. It would never reach. How much do i need to adjust the cam gear?

Here's a link that will help you out: http://www.d-series.org/forums...17653
but you answer your question, I think you need to advance your cam 4.75* or retard it that amount. I'm not exactly sure which. You actually need a cam gear for a y8 but I think the z6 you have will suffice. You just wont have enough adjustability as the y8 from what I was told.
