Default Pulley holder tool use

Hello all,

My question is about tool use. I'm trying to change the timing belt on my wife's 98 civic. I purchased a tool to hold the harmonic balancer while I loosen the crankshaft nut.

http://www.jtc.com.tw/en/produ...od=aa
Item 1902

The problem is that the frame of the automobile interferes with inserting the tool head into the recession in the pulley. The tool would work great if I pulled the engine out but I'm really not set up to do that.

Has anyone else run into this problem and how did they solve it ?

Could anyone point me to a tool for sale online that would work for certain with the engine in the car ?

Slightly off topic, could someone recommend a good online place to buy parts. I'm willing to pay a little more for "real" Honda items.

Thanks in advance !
- J

Ive never heard of that tool not fitting into the pully like you mention altho most people dont use that particular tool. The one Ive seen dosent have the handle built into it rather a spot to accept a 1/2" breaker bar.

Most people use a tool like this one here:

As for parts this is a good site to check out prices for OEM honda stuff I use it all the time.

If you know someone who works at an auto shop that can order it for you instead of yourself you can save some $$$ that way too. (Shop Discount) most dealers will let you walk in pay cash for an item and let you use so and so's shop discount if there all set up in there system.

Heres my how to thread on this topic if it helps you as well

Good luck!

try taking off the motor mount and tourque mount to lower the motor down some so it clears the frame.

That seems like a lot of unnecessary work to me. Best bet would be to get the right tool in my opinion. the motor mount is easy enough to get off but that rear torque mount is a bitch to get at.

you wont even need to take the rear one off just 2 bolts on the front one and like 4 on the motor mount the motor only has to go down a little bit. why buy that $65 dollar snap on tool when he has one allready?

My car only has three mounts one on each side and one on the rear of the engine. You don't have to buy the snap on one tho, There snap on and guaranteed for life you can get anther brand for as little as 19.99 I've seen, also Auto Zone has them available for rent as well.

Yea the proplem with Auto Zone is 98% of the parts guys are Domestic guys or are just morons, so no one really knows what your talking about. I looked on the website and it had it on there as available to rent but when I went to the store they were clueless. This is the same bunch that gave me a strut mount when I called for an engine mount tho. Dumbass'

Well, to replace the timing belt and what not, you do need to remove the driver side engine mount/lower mount and drop the engine a tad with a jack under the oil pan. If you do this, you will have clearance to use that tool.
