I was driving one day and heard a clanking noise. Soon I found out that the bolt the hold the crankpulley broke in half. The stud is stuck in the motor. Has this happen to anyone? Or anyone knows the cause of this? Does anyone know what the dealer will charge? Please help with some info it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm going through the same thing with my Accord right now.

What you can try to do is drill a hole in the stud.
Start with a small bit then move up to a bigger one.

Drill it as big as you can w/o going bigger than the stud itself.l

Then go to your local hardware store and get an ez-out screw extractor.

Spray some pb blaster around the stud and let it sit overnight.

Then tap the extactor into the hole, get a big adjustable crescent wrench and
have at it.

Be careful not to break the extractor when you're trying to get the nut loose
or you'll be in the same boat as me. (up **** creek)

Fortunately for you, you probably have the original bolt in there
instead of a coarse thread suspension bolt

I was given the car the way that it is.

Somebody impacted a suspension bolt where the crank pulley bolt was supposed
to go. Not even the same thread pitch.

My guess is that your bolt may have not been properly torqued
but it's hard to say.

 

I believed that the mechanic did not install the pulley correctly resulting in a wobblely spin. I told him when he was finish with my car that I notice the pulley looks a little wobblely. He told me that it was normal. I also believe that wobble cause the bolt to shift back and forth. Thus producing heat and broke off the bolt. Just my theory.

 

My problem is fixed. It cost me a hefty amount though. Never trust a backyard mechanic to change your timing belt.

 

I've gone through the same problem. I was in my driveway when it happen. I hear this type of knocking nosie coming from the engine but I couldn't figure it. Then I hear a loud bang and saw the head of the crank bolt roll out from underneath the car. I was able to drill and re-tap out the treads,but when I was all done I saw that there was more damage than that. The knocking noise I heard was actually the crank pulley wobbling around and thats what cause the head of the crank bolt to break off, in that case it made the key way hole bigger. Cause of this I'm competely rebuilding my motor with (Top & Bottom). I bought an Eagle crank as a replacement.

 

I had Honda fixed the problem. However, I hope I did not damaged my key hole. Thanks for the info.

The last time that my timing belt was replaced the mechanic did not tighten the crank bolt enough and I heard a wobble sound. I figured out what had happened before anything serious broke. That bolt had warped and needed to be replaced.

 

How would you know your keyhole got bigger? Did you clearly see visual damages? Mine looks normal when the bolt broke off. I just hope the wobble did not damaged my crankshaft bearings too. I just got new bearings installed about 10,000 miles ago.

You can clearly see that it got bigger

 

I've been observing the pulley when the engine is on and no wobble. I guess that I'm still OK for now. Thanks Spriggan.

 

how much did it cost to get that bolt removed? im kinda in the same situation right now..

 

i bought a 4th gen with the same problem...
crank pulley bolt (more like a suspension bolt too) broke and left half the threads in the crank hole
crank threads for some 93s are 12x1.25 thread pitch
some are 16x1.5

luckily mine was the smaller
i drilled a larger hole and tapped 16x1.5 threads
got the OEM bolt

replaced valves and all the gaskets (thanks to crcdz) and got the car running

if it fails again ...then it fails...

 

this kinda scares me my pulley wobbles at idle but its looks fine over 1000 rpms is this somethin that i should get looked at before soemthin happens?????
