Default any way to get factory keyless to work with an aftermarket radio?

I have a 98 Civic EX without the factory radio. After doing some research I figured out that the stock radio must be installed for keyless to work. This is slightly dissapointing. Is there any way to get around it other then hiding the stock radio behind the dash?

thanks

This is the first time I heard of this. Before I got my alarm, I had an eclipse headunit, and my keyless worked perfectly.

The keyless is built into the factory radio with out it you will have to buy an aftermarket keyless system.

does your dome light work with your aftermarket radio?

there is a harness that we sell at C.City that integrates your oem radio along w. your new radio.

My god, a noob and his first post is absolutely correct. I am speachless, my hat is off to you!

But he is right the units are built into the radio for whatever reason. You have to get an aftermarket one now but on the bright side 95% of the wiring is already done for you depending on the options it comes with. Im 95% sure someone came out with a unit that plugs into the spot so you can keep your original key chains and all but im not positive on it so I wouldent hold your breath on this.

Actually, whenever i bought my 98 lx it had keyless entry. The oem radio was stuffed under the dash behind the cupholder and piggy-backed to the Kenwood cd player. If you really want to do the oem way, just get the harness from circuit city, connect the two radios, and shove the old one under the dash after you program it. Its not that hard and Honda is pretty helpful if you have questions about programming the remotes.

hmmm... so I have to buy the harness? I can't just plug the green plug into the back of the OEM radio and the other plug into the aftermarket radio?

I guess power is probably coming in from the main plug.

I thought I read that the green one only needs to be plugged in.

I bet that harness is expensive from c.city... actually we don't even have c.city in iowa... just best buy.

Im guessing you need the power from the radio plug too, If i saw a wiring diagram of the plug I could tell you for sure.

Just having the green plug plugged in will not work. This is the harness you need and it is not too expensive. Good Luck.

That metra harness kicks ***. The only thing is, the radio is SHOVED back behind my dash. It's such a tight fit, but I love having my keyless entry.

any recommendations on an aftermarket keyless system? I bought my 98 EX used without the factory radio, so I think that's my only option at this point.

96-98 the keyless was installed in the head unit.

99-00 theres a control module over by the driver side kick panel.

if you want aftermarket audio in a 96-98 you have to piggy back the radio to the new head unit and keep the stock head unit hidden in the dash.

If anyone has an OEM radio let me know... i don't even care if its damaged on the front. Its just going to sit behind the dash.

actually... one last question.

Can I use any 96-98 radio (dx, lx, hx, ex) or do I have to buy an EX radio?

I have the factory radio out of a 97 I could sell you. Its like in really good condition too. But that doesnt mean my price is incredibly high. I have been looking to get rid of it.
