Default all motor hatch ideas

hi!

im lookin for a way to outrun other hatchbacks around the city and want to go all motor.
i already have a 97 ls but i am wanting to go h22 or jdm accord SIRT. originally i wanted a gsr but EVERYONE already has one w/mods and i want to be able to beat them just motor to begin with.
Whatever motor i end up getting, i am going ALL MOTOR and I plan on header, underdrive pulley, clutch, lightened flywheel, cam/gears right away. I have a front end conversion though so I dont want a motor that isnt going to stay in the car. (<--more about this post in welding section)
What is my best bet, under 3k, for going all motor?

also, i am entering some car shows in the fall under construction--so this motor will be one of the main things i am showing on the car.

lemme know what you think!!!! (which motor and what mods you would do)

The best drag/street use $/performance swap in a hatch IMO is the H22

I woulg go H22 as well. If you go LS Vtec or B20 Vtec, you will have to invest in cams, injectors, engine management, and tuning on top of the other mods you mentioned which will probably put it out of the 3k range. If you have the resouces to get these withing budget, go B20Vtec. If not, H22

well this car is going to be a daily driver for a while--at least until i get another car and can park this one. i already have 2 cars but the other one is a 95 teg that i drive more than the hatch as it is.

i dont want to do ls/vtec bc of all the negative **** ive heard about it. also, the drivers side mount on my ls is ***'d up so i am getting a new block then selling the motor so i dont really want to buy another one and i cant do anything to this one. (the mount ripped out the threads and cracked it so i had to get a ac-14 bracket...like a horseshoe mount)

i really would like to eventually run 12's all motor.

so yall think that the h22 would be best? what could i do to it right away that would keep me a car length ahead of another car with an h22?
also, i got a friend thats got a h22 in a 93 accord coupe, stripped out, do you think i could beat him with a stock h22 and clutch? he doesnt have much done to the motor yet, its just that i would LOVE to beat him in my hatchie

not sure about a b20 but a k series would be tight.....just outta my range....

any other suggestions?

Out of the box the H22 will serve you well but IMO the law of diminishing returns comes quickly on the H as well as reliability issues I have seen too much of for my taste. Add in worse understeer, weight, and a shoehorn package that eliminates any hopes for A/C (I'm in Ga and we covet it) and is tight to work on...you have your answer for why everyone runs B series.

I would do a k20a2
best bang for your buck. they take bolt ons so nicely too. not uch needed for internals to tear some rubber.
I have a frankenbeast and its nice and all but k20s are the ****.

since you dont have too much cash I would find a b16 and bore it out to 1.8
b-series are nice but all motor requires some serious work
