Default CBR Battery problem

I have had some problems with my battery lately. People have been telling me that I should go get a new battery. But before doing so, I've decided to give it a good charge and go from there. The battery has been sitting in the bike for the whole winter and in addition i didn't charge it before taking it out. Is it necessary for me to get a new battery? How do you tell if the battery is dead? I'm riding a 2002 cbr f4i and the battery is stock. Please give me some advice.

If you have some form of a Voltage meter and have not charged it yet try this... Is the voltage higher or lower then 9.6V? it > then the bat may be ok. if lower, its gone. I would give it a shot, charging it, but for a couple of days riding don't ride too far, and pay close attention to the bike when its starting. if it starts cranking slower then normal i would dump it before you get stranded

Have it load tested. After charging it, put a load on the battery (starter would be a good test) and have the voltage tested. If the voltage drops drastically say less than 10 volts while the starter is engaged then it is bad.

Most auto parts stores will load test the battery for free. That is really the best way to test the battery.

Good luck.
