Not worth it. Swap a head on there from an Ex with an Ex ecu, THEN get it chipped. Oh, and you'll need to go OBD1. They dont make poop for OBD2 which is what you have.

The Hx is for fuel economy, not performance by any means so your better off getting something better to work with, hence the ex head.

even if things get to the point of being able to chip OBD2 ECUs better, the built in wideband controller in the P2N is going to make things nasty to figure out.
As well mapped out as the OBD1 ECUs are.... the P07(VX) ECU is a mystery yet for the same reason.

 

I have been putting some thought into switching to the ex manifold and ecu, getting a vtec controller and droping it to about 3,500 (about stock hx rmps) and go from there. Theres some good features on the hx head however the egr isnt one of them ie the manifold replacement. swapping the whole head for such a little hp difference? I think more could be milked out of the hx head to be honest.

You will see at least 15hp by swapping to an EX head. And you get the Real SOHC Vtec as well.
The Hx vtec-e has only one valve open below the vtec point which is somewhere around 3500 or so. Above this both valves are open.
On an ex however above the vtec point both intake valves are opened MORE.
Now which is the better path? Thats your decision. But I wouldnt waste time and money dinking around with a Hx head.

 

Leave the head and swap the transmission!!

The HX gearing and final drive is pitifull.

 

i have the ex 5 spd tranny. it used to be automatic, but the guy who i bought i from put the ex 5 speed when the hx tranny went out. how complicated is it to swap the heads, and would i have to relocate the cat, or just remove it, and if i swap heads then do i need to go obd1?

 

Swapping heads isn't too hard, just search for 'mini-me' and you'll find tons of stuff on it. You shouldn't have to relocate the cat, only if you bought an aftermarket header.

You won't have to go OBDI if you swap heads, but it would allow more tuning capabilities.

No you wont. However if you want to chip it or play with the ECU you will need obd1 simpily because obd2 is too complicated to modify and no one has really worked on it, or found it wothwhile to do so.

You DO know that the "economy" you speak of is derived from the ECU NOT the head. I will show all the naysayers that the Y5 can be made powerful. Also can you back up the claim of 15hp from an EX head with a dyno???? Or did you just pull that out of your ***...?

Anyway to the topic starter, What am I doing for turbo is chipping an OBD1 P28 and using a OBD2A - OBD1 conversion harness ( dont beleive everything yopu read. Just as some say the Y5 head is worthless, some say ALL 99-00 civics are OBD2B which is WRONG). You can then chip the OBD1 ECU and go from there.
