If i were you i would search howstuffworks.com or buy a honda engine builder handbook to get a basic idea of how a four stroke motor works and what cams are...
but basically cams (camshafts) time the opening and closing of the valves to allow an air/fuel intake charge into the compression chamber during the intake stroke and the spent gasses out of the compression chamber durring the exhaust stroke and ensure the valves are closed during the compression and power strokes
