Just went to the Acura dealership regarding my clutch
I just went to the Acura dealer regarding my clutch. I explained to them that the pressure plate felt weird and that my clutch would slip in higher rpms. Car has 37k miles. Basically they told me that it would cost me $240 dollars to pull out the transmission for inspection. If there is a factory problem, they would refund my money and fix and clutch for free. If my clutch needs to be replaced, it would cost me $1000 dollars, the $240 would be kind of like a down payment. They told me that the clutch is a "wear" item like brakes and is not covered under warranty. Suggestions? Anyone around the Chicago area know any other Acura dealers that might replace it under warranty? In the past, how have other members approached this problem? Thanks for your replies
I doubt they are going to replace a clutch at 37K miles.

Call up King Motorsports and get an appt up there for the work. Good people and much better prices than the dealer.

get some tools, 2 jacks and jackstands and do it yourself
the reward to say that you accomplished it yourself is far greater than paying 1k to do it

How do you think you get experience?
Install it yourself. It takes a little muscle but there is nothing "hard" about it. A simple haynes manual from your local auto parts store will work fine if you don't possess the factory helms manual and it has better pictures to boot.
If I can do it anyone can.
Use that money you were going to spend and pick up...
All of that will cost you less than $150 from haborfreight.com. Cheap but works just fine.

yes you are right, that is how you learn, but grabbing a manual and pull the tranny off w/ no expierence doesnt always work out perfect first time around. It's not jus an intake, wrong installation could cause serious damage. id suggest getting some help from an expiernced person and paying close attention. but hey its not my ride...best of luck

if I can do it myself anyone can do it! Just be sure to use Willards ball joint trick and you're gold. Honestly I had no clue what I was doing and I was able to do my own clutch install with everyday tools. I got the exedy and loved every minute of it

I your chances of having the clutch replaced under warranty would depend on what's failed or worn out. I had a clutch replaced under warranty when I lived in CA just shy of 30K, but it was because the disk had cracked. The first dealer did not want to replace it under warranty so I had the car taken to another dealership who replaced it under warranty. Unfortunately, there are differences between dealerships. I would hope and could see a dealership replacing a clutch under warranty if something broke under relatively normal use, but would not expect them to replace it under warranty if it broke or wore out because of abuse. I don't know anything about the dealership you're dealing with, but they almost sound like their being reasonable. I had a similar arrangement with the dealership who replaced my clutch under warranty. I agreed to pay for any labor during an inspection and then I could decide where and/or with what I would replace my clutch if they would not cover it under warranty. They don't want to take the risk or spending the time (read money) and not being able to collect.
If you feel comfortable with the dealership I would have them inspect the clutch with the understanding that if it is not going to be covered under warranty you may only pay for the inspection and have the car taken elsewhere or you may have them do the work. In other words they are not going to do any more work until after hearing more form you, which most dealerships will do anyway. That would be up to you to decide after they find out what's wrong. There has to be some trust on your part that the dealership will be honest in their assessment and if you don't think they will then take it somewhere else. The one thing you may have to prepare yourself for is the fact that it may have just worn out, which it kind of sounds like it might have, and you'll have to cough up the money no matter where you go to have it inspected or serviced.
One other thing, unless something has changed, don't expect any help from Acura. I called their help line many times and was told I could not speak with a regional or national service rep. I made enough waves that I actually did get a call from some one about two weeks after my clutch had already been replaced.
As for other area dealerships, the only one I've dealt with and they were very reasonable and seemed pretty trustworthy was Acura of Brookfield up around Milwaukee. Also as someone else mentioned King Motorsports are excellent and their people are great. If you're thinking of using them I'd send Clayton (Ausmith) a message. The only advantage I could see dealing with a dealership for this is initially is there's a chance, no matter how slim, that it may be covered under warranty, where as if you go somewhere else there's no chance. If its not going to be covered under warranty some other shops will be as good, if not better, and cheaper. I hope this helps.
