power steering removal...HP gain?
Straight up gain....no
Free up HP yes.
The engine makes the same HP with or without PS. With the removal of PS it frees up a couple of HP, meaning the engine does not have to use any power to turn another belt, less drag=more power.
There was a dyno around at one point that had a before and after run. Before with AC and PS, after was no AC no PS and the N1 crank pulley, there was a 5-7hp "gain"
The actually pump and unit only weighs 20lbs(maybe) it takes aprox 100lbs to gain 1/10sec on the 1/4mile.

awesome explaination thanks dude. i actually already did it today and i saw a little bit but nothing that drastic. does it matter if i didn;t take out the lines that carry the fluid? cuz i didn't feel like taking the bumper off today.
no no no no i may be new here but im not a moron haha. i took out the whole assembly with the pulley and the belt with it, the resevoir...all the hardware peices, just not the PS fluid lines that run through ther bumper and into the cabin through the firewall. i might just put the whole thing back on anyway it doesn't even seem worth it. any opinions?
There should be no PS lines going into the cabin.
You should have 2 lines going to the front of the radiator and back to the fluid tank. you will have one large line going from the pump down the the rack, and one line from the rack back to the tank.
Do a search for PS removal kit by a guy names pandawn(sp?) He sells a kit with all the fittings hoses and all. lets the fluid still circtulate, It is supposed to be easier than just taking the belt off, but not as easy as having full PS. I installed it on my car, but have not driven it yet.

Well without the belt the fluid just stays in one spot. It will lead to extra wear.....down the road. In a few days is a little excessive.
Do a search about it, the subject has been covered many times. With the pandawn kit is allows the fluid to move the way the system is designed too. I did a lot of reasearch about just takng the belt off compared to buying the kit, and i went for the kit.

ok well hold on for a second. i didn;t just take the belt off, thats ridiculous. i took the whole thing out. except the lines themselves which i plugged up where it would attach to the resevoir and to the peice itself. so its basically flowing into nothing. its hitting the stoppers i put in and going right back where it came from i assume. like i said, it didn;t do much at all and im prob gonna put it back on. some kid said that if you take it off it adds 25 hp but maybe thats on a the 91 motor he has or MAYBE hes full of crap haha. i dunno. but i def didnt get 25 i know that.
PS. and after i took the thing out i had my friend turn the wheel back and forth and got all i could to spurt out into a container. so whatever was in there is gone. if theres any fluid left in it...its not much of anything at all.

k what you need to do is read padiwans post and the links in it... it will explain to you that the ideal setup is to run both the lines from the rack into a breather \ reservoir so that when you turn your wheel ur not fighting the fluid in the rack.. not only does it make ur steering easier to turn but it also extends the life of ur rack...
Arnt most integras "speed sensitive, Power assisted" Which means it has a basic rack n pinion just a lil extra boost at stand still for easier turning and parking capability. I had my my power steering pump out for about 2 months now with nothing special done.. its just rack n pinion when you take out the pump and resevior. At least in my 91 Rs it is.

I did mine because of a fluidamper race pulley. No room for the PS belt. I still have the power steering rack, no manual steering rack. It's a bitch to turn in parkking lots, but I like the way it feels on the roads, much tighter, no where near as loose as my other integras.

I hate it as well(removed that is).Not that you really have a choice with a custom(homemade) turbo kit.As stated above its great when turning but in tight spaces be ready to use both hands!
i doubt the steering rack will go to **** in a few days; when i was 16 and had my first car(88 accord), a rock got lodged in my ps pulley, and obviously the belt fell off. i felt a noticeable gain in low/mid range acceleration, and since i was lazy i let it go for over a month...until school started and i had to parallel park everyday lol. so after a month i put a belt back on and it worked perfectly fine.

Ok here is the kit I was talking about. So you are running the rack dry?? With no PS fluid??

haha uhhh
i guess i am running it dry. im sure theres still some in there but its plugged on both sides...im taking from your question that it would be bad to run the steering dry...even WITHOUT the POWER steering fluid and the power steering peice out. if you dont have the power steering assembly in it why would you need the fluid? please excuse my ignorance on this subject.

the fluid is there to keep everything lubricated......kinda like oil in your engine
Rear through the link i posted above. That is the kit I have. There is tons of great info in that thread
