balanceshaft removal on h22
Unless you want every last pony out of the motor or its mainly a track car just leave them in there. The horse power you gain is hot worth the wear on the motor. Un like the DSM's that will usually pick up about 15-20 extra HP the H22 will only see about 5-8 HP depending on set up. Not worth it IMO
on my old engine i took off the balancer shaft belt. The car gained a lot of low end torque, and a noticble feel in power... Car idled the same, but at around 2500rpm i could feel a little vibration through my gas pedal. I had it llike that for atleast 15k miles. I also have an aluminum crank pulley. When i broke a piston last november, and tore the motor down, the bearings all still looked great...
On my new engine i took the balancer shafts out completely and bought a full balancer shaft elimation kit. Had to plug a few oil galleys, and tap/plug one, and press in plugs into the oilpump... Removing the balancer shafts will not wear your engine out!!! It is just for people who want their car to run very smooth. 4cyl engine 2.0 liters and above come with them. Do you see people with stroked B18's putting balancer shafts in their 2.1 liter engines??? I dont think so.

I can't comment on wear, power gain, or vibration. But I did want to add that 4 cyl. cranks are fairly balanced as is, I really don't think you would do much harm. Comparable to a DSM (which I used to own) the lobes on the Honda balance shafts are pretty skimpy. I would assume the motor is pretty balanced as is.
the idle chafts are there to cut down on secondary vibration and to smooth the dash shake at idle. its a comfort thing.
i dont run the belt on my h22 accord, h22 civic, and took the belt out of my wifes 99 prelude and she never knew.

I know on the Nissan QR25DE some people have wirring harnesses come lose and fuel rail problems, however we are talking about a 2.5. But It is a balanced engine with balanced and micro-polished crank and cams.

You people who have taken off the belts or have removed the balancer shafts, do you have dyno numbers to back up the powre added. I have first hand experiance with this and its not worth it to dis-connect then or remove then un-less its a race engine. Every motor is different and thus is going to have different harmonics. The vibration isn't only hard on the engine but the entier car. From the mounts to the wiring like in the nissan tha was stated. If this is going to be a daily driver or see more street use then track use I say leave tehn in there.
haha: owned....
thanks for all the advice, though. i've decided to keep the balance shafts. which actually means i'm gonna have to put them back in the block i'm getting. got some sick deals from my friend back in my texas hometown. 2k for a block o-ringed and machined by GE and a bullfrog/gude head package w/ cams. and a set of carrillo h-beams with 3/8" bolts for less than 500
i know i'm gettin OT, but i gotta share my excitement with some people who can appreciate what i'm sayin.... for once
