Default Bike Noobie

Hi guys I wanted to ask your opinion.

I will be getting my motorcycle license this summer and I wanted advise on what bike to buy...of course I'm looking into used.

Here is what I absolutely love,
the 2004 and 2005

RC51 (yes I know too much power for me)

CBR600F4i

GSXR600

and favorite

Katana 750 or the 600

What would you suggest I get? I know that these bikes might be too much for me, I'm 5'4" and 125lbs. I never wrote a bike before, I am taking classes this summer. Please don't flame, I'm trying to learn.

Definitely start on a 600. Dam if you lived here in cali I could let you ride mines But any 04 and 05 is pretty much alike, only diff is the rider on the bike.

Thank you for actually answering my question. Also, I was wondering if some bikes would be too heavy for me?

It's nice to see you finally saddled up and posted in here. Did you read the stickied thread about beginners buying a bike?

of course everyone is going to recommend that you start off with a ninja 250. I say take the Msf course and see how you like riding their, if you want to further proceed in riding pick up a 250 or a 600cc bike of your choice and ride. All 600's are the same w/ a different body style. For a new person riding, Id say nothing more then a 600 is the best. 600's have a great amount of power that will keep you satisfied.

Welcome to the Motorcycle Part of Honda-tech! If you have any questions leave a post and people will get back to them and answer them as best they can for you. lol

In all honesty, you'll probably be most comfortable on a Ducati Monster, '04-up Yamaha R1, or a '05 Suzuki GSX-R1000. Fact of the matter is, not a lot of people like the naked Monster and the R1 and GSX-R1000 obviously are.. well.. liter bikes. Probably not a great bike to start with.

Because I have one, I would NOT recommend getting an RC51 as a first bike. It's just not forgiving at all. My sv650s on the other hand was a very forgiving bike. I can't speak to the other bikes you listed because I have not owned/ridden them.

As I had read in the noobie thread, some older model bikes don't have as much power as new ones? Is this true and should I be looking for a bike from 1980 - 1990's? What worries me is that an older bike seems....well used, and I worry that something might be wrong with it, I don't have a death wish. Also I know the RC51 is way too much for me I just like the way it looks, I just wanted to give you a general idea as to what appeals to me. I asked whether the 600cc is not too much because in the noobie thread everyone says something different, some say 600 is fine and some say 250 is plenty. Also I put that I'm 5'4" because someone said they were 5'3" and were told they were too short to ride.

best thing to do for your height is go to a dealership and go sit on some of the bikes. See which one feels more comfortable to you. I think for your height, 5'4" I think the 600 would be a little to big, but i think you can shave some of the padding of the seat out. The 250 should be fine with your height, and is really affordable for a beginner street bike. Best of luck with your choice!

5'4" is not too short to ride. Consider the fact that you'll be wearing boots everytime you ride. Also, go and sit on some bikes at the dealership. Don't be afraid to sit on the 1000's either. You'll notice the difference in seat width and how that contributes to valuable footing. I highly recommend the Monster or something in that range. It's very low to the ground and the power won't scare you. Read my sig.

BTW, all those horsepower figures you read about are PEAK power. It's the sudden rush of torque you should look out for. Otherwise, most 600 powerband rolls on pretty smooth. Fast, but smooth.

Pick up a 250 Kawi Ninja for $1500-$2000. They're light, easy to manuver, and cheap, so if you drop it, you won't be out a lot of $$$. Plus, after you out grow it, you can sell it for almost the same $$ amount you bought it for. Good luck and pick up some riding gear.

I doubt most people read that thing anymore. 8 pages is a lot to sift through. I don't even read it anymore.

Shady - regardless of what you decide to purchase, don't forget to budget for gear.

We would be well served to boil it down into one concise post and sticky that.

Meh... no one will read it anyway as everyone thinks their situation is special. Maybe if someone started locking all the "which bike" theads...

Anyone who recommends a supersport 1k or 600 to you as a first bike is a moron. THEY ARE NOT NEWB BIKES!!!!

Chances are, if you get an SS 600/1k you will be way too tense to actualy ride it and have fun. They dont like new riders at all. You make a mistake, the bike will **** on you. They are scapels. Would you want to start cutting up a guy on a surgery table without ever doing it before? The end result of that guy will probably look a lot better than you will when you screw up real bad on a new SS bike.

Now, the Katana 600 is a much better choice for a new guy. It is slower than an SS 600, it is more comfy, and it is much less twitchy. That is the only bike you listed I would recommend.

How about something like an SV650? Not really the most sexy styling, but deffinately a fun and forgiving bike.
