how do i read my oil pressure gauge?..what to look for?
just got it installed and not sure how to read it. I put it in cause my piston rings just started to go bad and my car is my daily driver. If i'm driving on the highway i want to know when i've lost too much oil and i need to pull over and pour some in. Where is it supposed to be at what rpm? my idle jumps around a little bit but nothing crazy. When i idle at 800-900 it stays at about 16 psi....when it idles at 400-500 it goes as low as 11-12 psi but never lower then that. last night when i idled at about 800-900 it stayed at 20-21 psi....but then eventually dropped back down to what i stated before. Is there anything i should look for to know whether or not i should be worried?
BTW: motor is a d16z6

how about answering the question my man......if my pockets could afford that then that is what would be done...but until then easy driving and keeping tabs on my oil.
Anybody else that can ANSWER my question and not give their opinion?

The pressure gauge isn't an oil level gauge. Of course when you run out of oil, or you starve the pump, you will have no pressure, but it's not designed to be used that way.
I'd be suprised if you got any meaningful answers on this topic, because I'm not sure if anyone has used one to know when to put in oil. Why don't you just check the dipstic every hundred miles or so? I mean, I know it's a pain and all, but at least you'll know for sure.

your pressure will remain the same till your oil level goes dangerously low. its not a level gauge its a pressure gauge. you wasted money on the gauge. by the time your oil goes low enough to cause a pressure fluctuation you a) will already damage your engine more, b) have your light turn on

Did i say i don't check my oil?.....Did say that was a pain? Stop assuming ****. I check my oil everyday. But i am planning a road trip this weekend....i'll be doing 3 hours on the NY thruway. Checking my oil before i leave isn't gonna help me 2 hours into the trip at 75-80 mph. And i could pull over during the trip, but then i have to sit and wait 15 min. for all the oil to come down to get an accurate reading. But seeing how people answered my question like i asked, now i know it isn' t gonna help me. Now i have to pull over and do this anyway and delay my trip even longer.

my car (b series) is 25~40 psi at idle, and 70~80 psi under wot/vtec.

I agree that it's not going to solve his checking problems, but it will alert him before he gets to the point of an idiot light. I've heard they turn on about 3 psi. I managed to snap my sensor almost completely in half changing my oil, and drove around for 2 days before the sensor finally turned the idiot light on.
Your pressure is going to be high when you first start the car until it warms up.

My fault, just frustrated about the wasted money i spent on the gauge. INstead my comment was directed towards dood who said it was a "pain".

like a quart a day?
</TD></TR></TABLE>
not much...only had to add half a quart in the last week and a half...and this includes only letting vtec kick in maybe twice in this time span. It doesn't leak and it only smokes lightly when vtec kicks in. Just trying to avoid to what happened to me 2 weeks ago and let my car last me a couple more weeks till i get my swap.
Here is what happened two weeks ago that started all this:

An oil pressure gauge will tell you nothing about your oil level. The pressure is gonna stay normal untill your oil level drops below the oil pick-up. Then your fucked!!
Once my engine is warm, I get 12 psi of oil pressure at idle.
normal oil pressure while cruising is around 50psi
oil pressure with foot heavy on the gas pegal 70-75 psi
When the engine is cold, oil pressure goes close to 90 psi.
