I've had like 5 month old gas in a car that i've been fixing up. It has been having trouble starting and I haven't really thought about it until now, that the gas could be contributing to the problem.

My question is how long does it take for gas to go bad and in what ways does it go bad?

Theres about a quarter tank in there, what do you guys think I should do? Just drain it all out or should I just add some fresh gas in there to mix it up?

 

Everyone's going to tell you something different here. Me for instance, I fill the tank right to the top before winter storage, add a thing of fuel antifreeze and use it when I pull it out in the spring.

If you're having trouble getting it started though, the fuel might be one problem you wish to eliminate before you start buying parts.

 

yeah, sounds logical. I changed the fuel filter, which is fine with me. But I was about to get new injectors, possibly a new fuel pump. Until suddenly i realized the gas has been in there since winter started.

Is there an easy way to drain the gas? Like is there a drain plug at the bottom of the tank?

I could go check, but i'm too lazy to go in that cold garage with spider infestation.

WTF is that going to do?

Find the drain plug on your gas tank and drain the shitty gas. Fill up with fresh gas. New year, start with a fresh tank of gas.

 

I bought a car sitting for about a year with a half tank, it would just barly not start so I had a some octane boost, used that and it started. But now that I think about it, it probly had some 87 in it.

 

Regular 87 is fine, just not if it's been sitting for 6 months.

There's a drain plug at the bottom of the tank, open it drain it and put new gas in. See what happens before you buy more parts.

 

Either drain or add some water remover.

Drain the gas, replace with new gas. Easy.
