Default Custom k20a3 cams are here!

Just got them today. Will be installed & running by this weekend. I'll be working on a base map all next week.

lift did not increase much, duration went up a TON. lobe is very similar to rsx-s VTEC lobes and should make similar power in the a3 head.

will require valvespring & ecu upgrade at install time.

They're custom, I sent my specs to the cam shop. they sent these back. heh. If you guys want them, I can have copies made. for right now, these are one of a kind. When I get them installed & dyno tested, I'll post more about how you can get a set for yourself.

Here are some more pics.

here are the two different k20a3 exhaust rockers. The one on top is the older style, the bottom one is the revised part.

side view. the one on the right is the new style.

rocker assembly, note that the newer style rockers do not use the shims from the older style rockers.

The semi complete head assembly.

more pics.

I chamfered the edge of the intake & exhaust ports @ 45 degrees to take away the sharp lip that's there. won't do too much, but it'll let me feel good about myself for a job well done. The ports on the head are smaller than the ports on the manifold so I figure it could only help.

And for those who've never seen an external valve spring compressor in action

Unfortunately, I had to use the k20a3 springs for now. The k20a3 retainers are too small to fit onto the rsx-s springs that I had. Those will go in shortly once I get retainers here. But I will at least be able to crank the car this weekend and start tuning the low end pronto. :D I will also be upgrading all the rockers to the newer style as they appear to be lower in mass.

excellent work!

i haven't looked atbthe a3 head much. those intake ports are huge!

i think a mild polish and unshrouding the valves would really top it off. keep us up to date!

yeah, but I really wanted to keep the CC as stock as possible so as to show what bolt-in gains would be.

Shop wasn't in atlanta. there are very few places in the country that can do a reliable camshaft re-grind

do you know why they revised the rocker arm with the new one? because I recently had my car in the shop and it turned out there was a chunk missing out of my rocker arm and had to have it replaced with the new one... i didnt take my car to the dealership because my car was out of warranty but if there is any possibility that it was honda's fault then i want to see if i can bring it up with the dealership

Honda just revises parts when they see fit. revisint a part is not an admission of fault on their part that they sold defective parts. I doubt you'd have luck bringing it up with the dealership.

and I'm leaving now to put the head back on! can't wait!

I worked from about 1:30pm until nearly midnight today.

SHE'S ALIVE!!!!!!!! well, sort of. she won't idle, and she takes forever to turn over, but these are tuning issues that I will have solved within a few days. Using the RSX-s cold air basemap from hondata, she ran good @ full throttle (i took her up to 6000rpm or so). I cannot WAIT to have these puppies tuned.

I was so upset that I couldn't drive her home tonight.

Great work, let us know when its tuned.

I am just curious, how much to get the sticks cut?

I'll release all the pricing details once I get everything tuned. I plan to offer them for sale as a lesser expensive alternative to k20a & k20a3 head swaps. So they'll run cheaper than a used k20a2 head by a good bit.

So I just wasted my late lunch break to get the car to idle. she idles around 1500. I could idle her lower, but she'd have a NASTY lope. :D at 1500 it's still rough, but the car won't die at 1500 whereas if I idled her lower, if you blip the throttle, she tries to die.

These cams are NOT for the weak at heart. they will put hair on your chest and make it fall out if you already have hair on your chest. :D

Interesting
Do you think you will be able to take it to 8K (and do you think it will make power there)?

got the car idling and running pretty well. cams pull really hard from 3500rpm on up.

here's a teaser video clip from my digicam. sound is shitty, but you can hear the lope. it's not that bad at 1000rpm. it lopes pretty rough at 750, but you can idle at 750 if you'd like. Took me forever to set the cam angles/fuel/ignition down there.

right click save-as please

8k will be no problem with upgraded valve springs. The bottom end doesn't like anything beyond 8k though. These cams will make power to 8000+rpm
