Default Possible bearing noise from tranny in 98 Accord DX 5-speed manual

Its got 87k miles on it and my friend/mechanic says its the bearings in the tranny, however he's not very experienced with this type of work. The sound is like a rattling, somewhat highpitched (occasionally) type noise (it does sound like a bad brg somewhere). But it only happens when the engine is under stress, such as accelerating up a hill or downshifting and decelerating while in gear. It never happens when coasting in neutral or with the clutch pedal depressed. I'm contemplating on what to do:

1- Replace the brgs and take a risk with more tranny problems later
2- Rebuild this stock tranny
3- Replace with another tranny
4- Can I put a better tranny in place of this one, maybe from a 5-speed prelude or sumthin?

thanks for any help

Do you have the stock clutch in there? If so then it could just be the springs in the pressure plate that are moving around and the plate is worn. Some of the 00-02" S2000 had this same problem. sounded like it was coming from the tranny but it was the clutch. I would check that before you go and re-build the whole transmssion.

i would get someone who is a bit more experienced than your friend to properly verify the noise it is a lot of money and work to dish out on a tranny and even worse if it is not the cause of the noise

The clutch is stock as well as engine, except for some boltons. Someone else suggested it may be some clutch springs and a worn pressure plate. Someone else said the input shaft brg, is this something that can wait for the summer or very urgent?

Easy way to tell if its the in-put shaft bearing put the car in revers with your foot on the clutch. Is the noise still there when you have teh pedal on the floor or is it gone? If its gone the its the clutch, if its still there then its the in-put shaft bearing. If there making noise for you to hear I would get it taken care of as soon as you can.

damn dude i have the exact same problem. Sounds liek a rattle and a high pitch whine noise. I did drive mine for a bit like that and just yesterday something else happened cuz the car would not go into gears so i pulled it off for the 3rd time in 2 months

Drain your fluid and see if you have metal shavings in there cuz i sure did, lots of it too. Gonna get it looked at again and replace the bearings.
