that is an engine block stamp number not the number of the engine made... the date of production is stamped on the head with date codes...

It's the block serial #. Unique to that block casting, kinda like a VIN. If it ever gets stolen that is how the police can track it.

On that note, if you are ever buying an engine and that # looks like its been tampered with walk away from the deal. Never support the fuckwad parasites who steal peoples hard earned stuff.

 

the casting code can tell you what year the bottom end was made if you know how to read it.

 

my friend use to have a print out that told you how to read those...mine was similar to the one you are showing in the pic and the date from the block was 91. I will see if i can find it.
