Default Starter not engaging new flywheel? Starter checks out ok.

A friend of mine is having difficulty with the new clutch/flywheel he installed in his '97 base.

the flywheel is bolted on right side up. The tranny and starter are secure. When the key is turned, the starter can be heard spinning, but the motor does not turn. The motor was turned slightly by hand, and this had no effect.

The starter was tested, and it functions normally.

I am at a loss as to what possibly could be wrong.

Do you hear anything beside the sound of the starter spinning? What kind of flywheel did he put on?

It's my car.

Only the starter spins, no other noises. It's a Fidanza 8.5 lb flywheel.

Do you know that when you installed the starter teeth matched up with the ring gears of the flywheel?

the teeth appear to not reach. the arm extends out and spin, but makes no contact with the flywheel.

my friend's ring gear on the FW was spinning WITHOUT the FW. double check to see if that's happening to you. I believe he had a 8.5lbs fidanza too.
