Bike nights fuel the sportbike industry.
If there were no inclination among sportbike riders to gather and show off their machinery, product cycles would be longer.
For most riders, bikes exist as a way to make a statement about yourself, and to one-up the other guy.

Oh please. If I gave a f*** what other people thought, I'd still be riding my SV.
Or whoring out pics of my R6. Or taking the MSF class.

I meant it's funny that you think "bike nights" really provide a tangible service to the motorcycle industry. If anything, the results of actions at such events probably do an overall disservice to the industry.

Ah, I see what you meant.
I still stick by what I said. Read any bike magazine, and the articles will make mention of the always-escalating development going into modern sportbikes.
I'm not going to suggest that parking-lot stunnas and bench racers are the only driving force behind sportbike sales - pursuit of AMA supremacy is just as important - but they do play a big part in the frequency with which sportbikes are updated and re-designed. The sportbike segment, more than any other segment, is propelled by owners who want to have the newest and best machines. 600s of today can keep up with or beat litrebikes from as recently as five years ago, at least til 150 or so.
And the riders of these bikes, for the most part, aren't going amateur racing.

One could say the same for mid-market sports cars and I don't think you'd venture to say the race to build a better one is fueled by parking lot meets. Bikes are improved because there is a natural human tendency to want the next best thing and manufacturers want to make money. That desire, however, exists outside the realm that is unofficial motorsports gatherings like "bike nights".

Not for me, or you, or most in this forum. But would you say that we are in the majority of sportbike riders?
