Wow. First day on 600RR
As i'm sure some of you know, i recently purchased an 03 600RR in Black .. i test drove it last week but of course didn't get on it .. and today i actually took it out and went on my merry way.
One word ... WOW. Its an insane night and day difference from my '90 FZR600 to this. I feel more comfortable in turns, the power and speed is amazing, and the bike is absolutely beautiful. A photoshoot will hopefully come soon, until then, no pics
I only came across two problems. One, after riding it around for about 40 minutes, i turned it off .. went to turn it back on and it was dead. The previous owner said that because the clock stays on all the time, it wears down the battery and needs to be kept on a charger. This sounded a little odd to me, can anyone shed some light on this? I dont have the owners manual yet, so i cant look it up.
Second problem is with the throttle, as there is probly 1/8th(ish) of a turn of free play before it actually starts the bike to accelerate. I dont mean that it bogs, just in the 1/8th(ish) of a turn, it just doesn't make it accelerate, just nothing happens.
On a third note, MY CROTCH AND KNEES ARE KILLING ME. Ouch.
Also, this may not be too bad .. but i noticed that when i got on it and would shift up, i would think that i shifted and let out the clutch, to realize that it's still in the previous gear that i thought it was in .. which i think can become a problem when shifting and highspeeds, just to realize that i'm not and all that power with the clutch being let out can spell disaster. Hopefully some good tranny fluid can fix this.
The bike is freakin crazy, and i hope to keep it slow and easy .. but we all know how that goes. Sometimes it gets the best of us
I love the bike, and can't wait to ride some more.

Now aren't you glad you sold that slow POS and didn't listen to all the Good Samaritans who might have told you to keep it?
Glad you like the bike. I went through the same adjustment period of "Oh my god my 600 SS is stupidly fast" about a week ago. Even compared to a new bare-bones bike (my SV) or yesteryear's state-of-the-art sportbike (your FZR), it's just silly what these modern machines do.
What did you pay for the RR? Last time I paid any attention, you were thinking about getting rid of the Yummy-Ha.

Congrats on the purchase.
As for the throttle/clutch issues. The cables could need adjusting. I know on older bikes with carbs there was a little room to play on the cables and if not adjusted properly there would be a little free play in the throttle. Same with the clutch cable.
As far as the clock staying on all the time and killing the battery that is a line of crap. Why would honda design a bike that has to constantly be on a battery charger?
Come on it's not an electric bike or anything.
The battery probably has a dead cell or is going bad. If you let the bike sit for a long period of time and the battery goes too low it will not hold a complete charge the next time you recharge it. Eventually it wont take a charge at all.
My 929 sat for a year due to girlfriend drama and the fact that I was pretty busy with work/school. I recharged it and if I let it sit for more than a week or two the battery is almost completely dead again. I need to get a new battery for it but I am just lazy.
I would doubt that the charging system is going bad, but that could be the issue as well. As you will find out, honda's are notorious for having voltage regulator issues. Depending on the length of your ride, you would probably get stranded if your regulator was bad.
It sounds like to me that the battery will hold a partial charge. Once you start the bike and run it the charging system takes over and provides power during riding. Once you stop and park the bike the battery which doesnt seem to hold a charge for very long is dead again.
Finally for the tranny fluid comment, the transmission/clutch assembly uses the engine oil for lubrication. There has been a long standing debate about motorcycle specific oils vs. car oils and what is best for a motorcycle so I wont get into that. As long as you dont put in anything with friction modifiers as they tend to cause slippage on wet clutch systems you should be fine.
I personally use mobil 1 synthetic on all of my bikes/cars and have done so for the past 11 yrs. The motorcycle shops tend to sell non synthetic motorcycle oil for the same price as synthetic motor oil.
For info on testing the charging system/battery search for a post I made a few days ago about f4i battery/charging problems. Someone was having similar issues on their f4i and I gave some tips on how to check the battery/charging system.

That guy fed you a line of **** about the clock. Mine has sat for long periods during winter and never failed to start up, always on the first try.
As for the trannie, Im willing to you just not used to the bike yet. Give a few days, if its still happening then maybe its time to investigate. My RR shifts like buttah

Your shifting issue might be because you aren't letting the lever all the way back down before trying an upshift again. It is a ratcheting system. This happened to me on the way to work this morning because I am still getting used to my new boots.

Again .. WOW.
Went on a nice 60 mile or so cruise with a buddy on a long backroad. I'm still trying to get a feel for her ... but i am not really all the comfortable with turns and speed ... not neck breaking speed, i just dont know how i should be positioned and find myself going wide, also i am not comfortable with my tires and fear them slipping out from under me.
I did, however, almost lose it on one turn
The turn was a little bit sharper then i thought and i had a little too much speed (for me at least) and i started slowing down coming into it, and i was still going to fast entering the turn and i didn't want to brake through it and risk locking up the brakes .. so i went straight through the other lane and stopped about a food off the shoulder in some gravel .... it coulda been bad .. but luckily i'm ok.
Still loving the bike though, but my *** is definatly sore.

Damn, trying to be like me or what? Type r powered Si, black 03 600rr.... My **** always hurts after 45-60 minutes on that damn bike. need a Corbin seet.
well i think i've found the last of the "problems" with the bike, and it's with shifting. When i'm in neutral at a light or 2nd gear, i'm finding it hard to get back to 1st. It just doesn't want to get into gear, and i'm having to start in 2nd lol.
think i should just change the tranny oil? or is this something more serious.

If you think you might not make the turn...lean the bike even more. I did the same thing a few times on my SV until I realized I was barely even turning the thing. Your CBR has much higher limits than your FZR, so use them.

I had the same problem, simple solution when it wont go 1st, or if you cant downshift into 2nd / 1st...just simply slip the clutch slowly out, while pressing down on the shifter and as soon as it finds its niche it will slide in to desired gear...
understand?

BAHHH. I also find myself leaning in the opposite direction to create a "balance" .. but all i'm doing is making myself turn worse. So i dunno, any pointers to get comfortable thru turns, and leaning thru turns?

dont be afraid of the turn, look through the turn.look in magazines,u see the gp riders being able to drag their elbows, the bike will hold up.
i had that fear,i just bought an '05 600rr,i was afraid of turning but after riding it some time you get to know how you can throw it around and what its limits are.

well as i was told to do with the tranny .. it works perfect .. i let it out about halfway and it clicks right down into gear on it's own.
After about a week with it, i love it. No problems except for a little one today involving my fender eliminator kit. I'm not sure what brand it is, but it looks like a quality piece. The part that attatches to the plate is the size of the whole license plate, not just a small piece of metal, and it has a wheel on the bottom, i think so it can move with the fender when the shock compresses, so it gets out of the way. Well my friend sat on it today, and i noticed that when he sat on it it pushed the fender onto the tire, and i thought we moved it so it would be ok .. well, i was driving and i heard a weird sound, and it was about 4 inches of the tip of the fender being melted away .. it was gone. So i tied a shoe lace from one rear peg to the other which held it at a farther back angle and fixed it for now .. i'll fix it completely later.
Only upside of this i guess is .. time for a carbon fiber fender. I've checked around and am having a hard time finding carbon fiber parts for the RR ... anyone know of a good place that for sure has CF parts, and possibly an actual selection?
Thanks guys .. bikes tons of fun

Only upside of this i guess is .. time for a carbon fiber fender. I've checked around and am having a hard time finding carbon fiber parts for the RR ... anyone know of a good place that for sure has CF parts, and possibly an actual selection?
Thanks guys .. bikes tons of fun
