On the metal pieces I would sand them down, prime them and then paint... All that rust definitly isn't good but with some work it should clean up. good luck

Spray WD-40 or liquid wrench etc and let it soak in for about a day or two before removing those bolts.(since they may be hard to move from age) As for sanding get the sand paper thats made for sanding heavily rusted metal. It works very good and has a very strong backing. I found it at home depot in the paint supply area. Look in the spray can and auto paint area. And dood get a new battery quick

....just don't take it off while the engine is running. On a sohc I don't think the oil will come out anyway. I could be wrong on that.

i would say take your car to the car wash. tire cleaner your whole bay.. let sit for a few min. then spray it all down. then simple green it. then clean our battery up.. and paint your valve cover something simple. like wrinkle black.. would prolly make a good difference..

thats just my .02 though

chances are, if you have rust in your engine bay, a lot of your other body pieces and undercarriage have rust too.

wow dont know what to say.

i am bit overwhelmed of the harshness of H-T. think he came here to get help not get flamed, could u imagine if he had made a thread "i pulled a bunch a **** out of my engine i dont know what to do with it" at least he is asking before he does something stupid.

alright well most of the stuff u circled is safe to unscrew just make sure u replace it back. the only thing i can see that u circled taht could be stupid to remove is the upper hose (if that is what u were talkin bout when u circled it) its on the left hand side its the hose u can clearly see it. it contains radiator fluid if u take it out u gonna have to put fluid in it thats about it. u shouldnt have much trouble takin off the valve cover. u can wash/clean off the vavle cover at that time. people say simple green automotive works great. honestly never tried it but if i were to pick somethin to use to clean my engine it would be simple green. u can pick it up at autozone/kragen and other places. your going to want to make sure ur engine is totally cool before u start messin with this stuff. you dont want to be messin around with a hot engine. also you may want to get a steamer they work well for engines, i believe u can rent one for realitively cheap. i dont know about all that tire cleaner deal never tried it. dont know what else to tell u just use common sense. GL keep us updated on the progress .

ADD: also their are many do your own threads on H-T you can search for that will show u how to properly paint ur own valve cover. basically they will tell u to use aircraft remover to take off all the paint and other junk so u get bare aluminum. then u will have to paint then sand down and clear coat dont knwo the exact order but you can use threads like this one https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1241847 for reference. he is polishing his valve cover but u get my drift

clean it up with water and baking soda. Make sure you mix it correctly or else it will explode.

to disconnect the battery just use a wrench to disconnect the terminals. then unbolt the latch that holds it on.

if ur battery is acutally havin trouble then u should replace it but if u dont need to there is no need to waste 50 bux.
