Are hood pins rice?
I just got a CF hood and my mechanic kinda cringed when I asked him to install hood pins. He said they kinda rice. I didn't realize this and I bought them because I'm concerned about safety. I can see the hood sort of flappin in the wind on the highway andit makes me nervous. I like the look of them anyways.
Of the 3 CF hoods I've lifted, they all felt around about the same weight as the stock hood.
When I'm over 100mph, my stock hood kinda quivers in the breeze.
I'd guess that CF hood's move more based on poorer fitment than stock and not nearly as much on weight alone or lack thereof.
There are only 2 hoods I've personally felt on Hondas that really needed pins. And they weren't CF, ironically they were just fiberglass resin, but pretty much paper thin for racing purposes only.
To each his own, but I can guess that there are more than a few people out there with pins that absolutely don't need them.

I'd say that they could be considered "rice" on a stock hood. On a CF hood, especially those designed without proper bracing, they are a safety item for sure.

they will save ur life.
when i got my CF hood..i drove around on it and at 70 mph..the hood was shaking soo violently that i didnt dare to drive faster than 55mph.then i got hoodpins installed.

when i drive at anything over 70mph i can see my hood quivering...I have hood pins, i dont like having to have them, and its purely because i dont want to risk the hood lifting for any reason! But i dont think theyre ricey in anyway...unless theyre the fake ones that are just stuck on and serve no functional purpose!

I didnt use em, then again, i didnt have the money to spare on em.
If you want the extra safety, get em. Who gives a **** what is rice, its your car!

someone posted pics awhile back but i can't find the thread now, they were of some carbon look locking hood pins that matched cf hoods pretty well and did'nt stand out too bad. That's what i would get if i had a carbon hood that i was afraid of flying up on me.

Personally i think they look awful...i'd prefer to have the pins any day

Yea those do look nasty in those pics, besides, I remember seeing on a box of those that the lock is as a security measure but are not a substitute for pins. Just get good pins
Your mechanic is an *******.
Get what you want. FWIW if I had a cf hood I would install hood pins. I've been in a caR that had the hood pop open @ speed on the pkwy. It was NOT FUN and cause a **** load of damage to the caR.

If I was you, I would honestly care less what he thinks. let him stick to doing his job, you arent paying him for his opinion.
I've thought about getting hood pins myself, I'm not a huge fan of the way they look. My hood is a lot lighter than my stock hood, yet I havent really seen it flap or wobble at all. I guess time will tell, I'm still trying to decide. If you think they are whats best for you, safety is
in my book.

What are you talking about?
Just drill the holes in the hood, it's really not difficult.
Reid - who is beginning to see why you had to take your car to a mechanic to install hood pins...

No it doesnt...drill a small hole first and dremel it out to the size required for your pins...then get clear lacquer and coat the edges of the hole before fitting the pins.

I suppose fiberglass could splinter. Not that I've owned a CF (or fiberglass) hood before.
